摘要 A first transfer apparatus inserts a pair of elongated article components between upper and lower clamping jaws on a workholder mounted on a turret. The workholder is then moved adjacent to a second transfer apparatus which inserts a hollow article component into the workholder and moves the clamping jaws to insert the elongated components into the hollow component to assemble the article.

1. In an article transfer device: a first member mounted for reciprocation from an initial position, said member provided with means for holding an article against a front face thereof, a second member pivotally mounted adjacent to the front face of said first member, means for urging said second member toward the front face of said first member to hold an article therebetween, means for positioning an article between said second member and the front face of said first member when said first member is located in its initial position, and means for reciprocating said first member from its initial position to a second position to move the front face of said first member to pivot said second member against said urging means and away from the front face whereafter the article is held against the front face of said first member as it advances past said pivoted second member to transfer the article to the second position.
2. In an article transfer device as set forth in claim 1 wherein the means for holding an article against the front face of said first member comprises: said first member having a passageway extending from its front face and terminating at a surface thereof, and means for applying a vacuum to said passageway to hold the article against the front face of said first member.

In an article transfer device as set forth in claim 1 wherein: said means for holding an article against the front face of said first member includes a groove formed in the front face of said first member, a passageway extending through said member, one end of the passageway terminating at said groove, and means for applying a vacuum to said passageway to hold the article against the front face of said first member; and said second member has a groove formed in a side portion thereof normally in alignment with the groove in the front face of said first member.

In an apparatus for inserting an article into a resilient clamp on a workholder: a frame, a slide mounted on said frame for movement toward and away from said workholder, a transfer member mounted on said slide having an extended end projecting toward the workholder, said member having a groove formed in its extended end and a passageway terminating at one end in said groove and at its other end in a surface of said member, a guide member pivotally mounted on said frame adjacent to the extended end Of said transfer member, said guide member having a side normally located in engagement with the extended end of said transfer member, said side having a groove formed therein normally in alignment with the groove in the extended end of said transfer member, means for urging said guide member toward the extended end of said transfer member to hold an article between the grooves formed therein, a stop mounted on said frame and positioned beneath the extended end of said transfer member and projecting past the groove formed in its extended end, means for inserting an article in the grooved portions of said transfer member and said guide member whereupon the article is supported on said stop, means for applying a vacuum to said passageway to draw the article into the groove in said transfer member and to hold the article in that groove, and means for advancing said slide and said transfer member toward the workholder to pivot said guide member away from the extended end of said transfer member and to move the article off said stop whereafter the article is held against the extended end of said transfer member as it advances past said pivoted guide member to insert the article into the resilient clamp of the workholder.
5. In an apparatus for inserting an article into a resilient clamp on a workholder as set forth in claim 4: a camming member mounted on said frame and positioned to one side of said transfer member between said transfer member and the workholder, and said camming member having an inclined surface for contacting the article hold in the groove in said transfer member as said transfer member moves past said camming member toward said workholder to move the article to a desired position on said transfer member.
6. In an apparatus for inserting an article into a workholder having an opening for receiving the article and a resilient device mounted within the opening for clamping the article therein: a frame, a slide removably mounted on said frame, a transfer member mounted on said slide and projecting toward the workholder, said transfer member having a front face which can be received in the opening in the workholder, said transfer member having an upper pair of arms projecting from opposite sides of said transfer member and extending past its front face and a lower pair of arms projecting from opposite sides of said transfer member and extending past its front face, said upper and lower pairs of arms spaced apart a sufficient distance for spanning the workholder when said transfer member is moved into the opening in the workholder, said transfer member also having a groove formed in its front face and a passageway extending through said member, one end thereof terminating at said groove and its other end terminating at a surface of said member, a guide member pivotally mounted on said frame and positioned adjacent to the front face of said transfer member, said guide member having a side normally located in engagement with said projecting arms, said side having a groove formed therein normally in alignment with the groove in the front face of said transfer member, means for urging said guide member toward said projecting arms of said transfer member, a stop mounted on said frame and positioned beneath the front face of said transfer member and extending past the groove formed therein, means for inserting an article between the grooves in said transfer member and said guide member whereupon one end of said article rests on said stop, means for applying a vacuum to said passageway to draw the article into the groove in said transfer member and to hold the article in the groove, and means for advancing said slide and said transfer member toward the workholder to pivot said guide member against said urging means away from the front face of said transfer member to move the article off said stop and past said pivoted guide member, whereupon the article and said transfer member Are moved into the opening in the workholder while said pairs of arms projecting from said transfer member span the workholder and the article is resiliently clamped in the opening in the workholder.
