摘要 A medical device is disclosed, which employs a form of electric desensitization in connection with the use of pain-producing medical tools. The device is particularly useful in connection with dental drilling operations and includes, in the preferred embodiment, a coil mounted within a dental handpiece and a rotating permanent magnet mounted so that its magnetic flux overlaps the coil windings. Rotation of the magnet includes an electric current in the coil which flows through the drill and into the tooth to desensitize the nervous system of the tooth upon contact. An improved turbine bearing assembly is included, having an elongated substantially tubular hub interconnectable with an elongate collet to form a rotary chuck, preferably adapted to be used in a dental drilling handpiece. The invention also includes apparatus for manipulating this rotatable chuck.

1. Improved dental drilling apparatus having a fluid turbine bearing assembly of the type wherein a rotary chuck is provided wherein the improvement comprises: an elongated substantially tubular hub member having inner and outer opposite ends and connected to said assembly to be rotated thereby, at least said outer end protruding substantially axially beyond said assembly, said outer end having at least one substantially flat surface area adapted to be gripped to lock the turbine assembly against movement during manipulation of said chuck; an elongated substantially tubular collet member having inner and outer opposite ends, and adapted to fit concentrically within said hub, said outer end of said collet protruding substantially axially beyond said outer end of said hub, said outer end having at least one substantially flat surface area adapted to be gripped for manipulation to actuate said chuck; and motion translating means for interconnecting said hub and said collet, whereby said collet may be interlocked against inadvertent axial movement relative to said hub.
2. The device as recited in claim 1 wherein the inner end of each of said members is closed.
3. The device as recited in claim 1, wherein said motion translating means comprises: an external threaded portion on the inner end of said collet; and a correspondingly internal threaded portion proximal to the inner end of said hub, whereby said members may be interlocked against inadvertent axial movement.
