143 Fire barrier fabric EP89310591.6 1989-10-16 EP0391000A2 1990-10-10 Tolbert, Thomas Warren; Dugan, Jeffrey Scott; Jaco, Pamela Johnson; Hendrix, James Easton

A fire-resistant fabric (10) suitable for use as a flame barrier comprises a flame durable textile fabric substrate (11) formed of corespun yarns (15), the yarns (15) comprising a core of flame resistant filament and a sheath of staple fibers, and an intumescent coating (20) carried by one surface of the textile fabric substrate (11). In normal use, the fabric (10) is flexible and conformable and has good air porosity. When exposed to high temperature and/or a flame, however, the intumescent coating (20) reacts and swells to form a char which closes the pores or interstices of the fabric (10) to thus prevent flame or hot gases from penetrating therethrough.

L'invention concerne l'industrie textile.

145 Fire barrier fabrics EP86302558 1986-04-07 EP0201204A3 1987-12-23 Porter, Rick A.; Hoernle, Hans R.

A breathable fire barrier fabric comprising a fiber glass fabric on which is coated an encapsulating coating that minimizes or eliminates fiber to fiber self abrasion and effectively adheres to the glass fabric even when subjected to heat and flames; said fire barrier fabric having a porosity value at an acceptable level such that the fire barrier fabric inhibits the spread of fire. The invention contemplates a coating and method of applying same for glass fiber fabrics :hat can mechanically protect the glass from self jestruction without contributing to the fuel value of :he fabric while maintaining a breathable fabric.

The heat insulating layer is a laminate comprising (A) a flame-proofing layer and (B) a reinforcing layer, wherein the main fibers of the flame-proofing layer (A) have a melting point of at least 300°C, a specific gravity not higher than 1.6 g/cm3, and a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of at least 33 and the main fibers of the reinforcing layer (B) have a limiting oxygen index (LOI) smaller than 33 but not smaller than 25, a specific gravity not higher than 1.6 g/cm3, a tensile strength of at least 3.2 g/d, and a toxicity test value of at least 10.

The cushioning member has a light weight and an easy moldability and also has heat insulating and flame-proofing characteristics capable of satisfying the fireproof regulations of the Federal Aviation Administration.

147 COATED FABRIC AND MATTRESS TICKING EP81902162.7 1981-07-22 EP0056405B1 1986-02-05 Ferziger, Daniel; Lippmann, Jerry
Coated fiberglass fabrics especially suitable for use as mattress tickings. The fabrics comprise a woven or non-woven fiberglass fabric to which a layer of a polymeric coating composition has been applied. The coating comprises a polymeric carrier containing an effective amount of a fungicide and/or bacteriocide, an effective amount of a flame retardant, and a filler which also functions to enhance the flame retardant properties of the fabric.
148 Fire-resistant mattress and high strength fire-retardant composite EP83303158.6 1983-06-01 EP0096534A2 1983-12-21 Klancnik, Alvin R.

Am improved mattress (60) includes a composite (10; 20) made of a layer (12; 22, 26) of a fire retardant material capable of providing a heat barrier bonded to a layer (14; 24) of high tensile strength material, such as fiberglass fabric. The composite (10, 20) encloses at least most and generally practically all of the flammable ingredients of the mattress. When exposed to a fire, the fire retardant material chars, thereby creating a heat shield that protects the inside of the mattress (60) while the high tensile strength material holds the mattress (60) together and prevents the mattress (60) from bursting open thereby exposing the flammable ingredients thereof to the fire.

The composite (10; 20) of the present invention is made by bonding a fire-retardant material capable of providing a heat barrier to a high tensile strength material.

This invention relates to a thin reinforced nonwoven fabric for fire blocking an article, articles containing such fabrics, and methods for making the fabrics and fire blocking the articles. When exposed to heat or flame, the fabric is capable of increasing its thickness by at least three times. The fabric comprises an open mesh scrim having a having crimped, heat-resistant organic fibers compressed thereon and held in a compressed state by a thermoplastic binder. When subjected to high heat or flame, the binder in the structure softens and flows, releasing the restrained crimped fibers and allowing the thickness of the fabric to increase dramatically.
