A bed foundation may be retrofitted or otherwise converted in the field to include one or more additional function. In one illustrative embodiment, the bed foundation may be retrofitted or otherwise converted by incorporating a drop-in articulation unit. Such an articulation unit may permit a user to raise and/or lower the head of their bed. In some cases, a second articulation unit may be placed at the foot of a bed foundation to permit the user to independently raise and/or lower the head and the foot of their bed. In other illustrative embodiments, drop-in units may add other functions to existing bed foundations. In some cases, the bed foundation and/or drop-in units may be configured such that it can be easily shipped and assembled in the field by a user.

171 | T-SHAPED SIDE RAILS FOR BED FRAME | PCT/US2005017125 | 2005-05-16 | WO2005112707A3 | 2007-06-07 | POLEVOY RICHARD S; CARLSON PAUL ERIC; RYAN HOWARD SCOTT |
A bed frame comprising T shaped side rails provide support for a box spring and mattress. A leg assembly is affixed to the bed frame and is affixed to the side rail and to the cross rails for better strength of connection. The use of T-shaped side rails provides more resistance to twisting and bowing and thereby more resistant to damage a leg or other structural component of the bed frame from moving the bed frame across the floor. The use of the T-shaped cross section side rails enables the overall bed frame to support more weight with less deflection than the convention L-shaped side rails. There are also headboard and footboard brackets that take advantage of the greater height of the vertical flange of the side rail to have affixation means, such as rivets, that are further spaced apart to provide a more rigid connection between the brackets and the side rails.

A mattress foundation (100) is constructed substantially of plastic material. The foundation is defined by a semi-rigid cavity including a generally flat top surface (110), at least one downward depending sidewall (120), and at least a portion of an outer surface of the sidewall having a pattern (620, 730C) formed thereon. Optional ground support members (130, 140) retain the foundation in a substantially horizontal orientation. An outer surface of one or more of the ground support members has a pattern (730D) formed thereon. An outer surface of an optional headboard (410, 710A) may have a pattern (730A) formed thereon. A portion of an upper side of the top surface (110, 750B, 750C) may have a pattern (730B, 730C) formed thereon. The pattern formed on the sidewall, the top surface, the ground support, or the headboard may give a quilted appearance to the foundation. The pattern may be three-dimensional or substantially flat. The pattern may be integral with the foundation or attached thereto.
173 | ASSEMBLY AND STRUCTURING SYSTEM BASED ON LAMINATED AND CORRUGATED CARDBOARD | PCT/MX2012000029 | 2012-03-22 | WO2012128604A3 | 2013-01-03 | ALBARRAN-TORRES LUIS |
The invention relates to an assembly and structuring system comprising the insertion of pieces of laminated cardboard into punched grooves in panels of corrugated cardboard in order to obtain three-dimensional structures that are very resistant in terms of the materials used, as well as being light and self-supporting. The applications are multiple, ranging from items of furniture such as chairs, tables, beds, items for loading products or display units, shelves and packagings, to construction elements such as mezzanines. The assembly system is also designed to be set up in such a way that it is practical and easy for the user, without needing to use tools. It enables and facilitates the transport of the structures in parts arranged in a compact manner, occupying a relatively small space.
174 | CLAMP ASSEMBLY FOR USE WITH ADJUSTABLE BED RAIL CROSS SUPPORT MEMBERS | PCT/US2007087528 | 2007-12-14 | WO2008082912A3 | 2009-09-24 | BARTELSMEYER ROBERT A; STROUD DAVID W |
A clamp assembly (44) for securing a pair of overlapping cross support members (24, 26) extending between two opposed side raiis ( 16) of a bed frame (10) is provided. The clamp assembly (44) includes a unitary clamp body (46), a ieg assembly (58) pivotally secured to the clamp body (46) and a iocking piate (112) pivotally secured to the clamp body (46). In order to prevent the cross support members (24, 26) from sliding relative to one another, the leg assembly (58) exerts force on the overlapping cross support members (24, 26). The ieg assembly (58) may comprise a first leg (62) pivotaily secured to the clamp body (46), a plastic insert (64) and a foot member (68). Alternatively, the leg assembly (58) may comprise a first leg (62) nestably secured to a second leg (90) in order to increase the length of the leg assembly (58).
175 | SUSPENDED FLEXIBLE MATRIX SUPPORT SYSTEM | PCT/US2008051849 | 2008-01-24 | WO2009058409A2 | 2009-05-07 | CONSTANTINESCU EUGEN; KUCHEL BERNHARD W |
A suspended matrix support structure has a perimeter frame which supports a flexible matrix formed with intersecting flexible members, the ends of which are supported by the perimeter frame. Edges of the flexible members are held within channels which form a frame about the flexible matrix. In one embodiment, the perimeter frame is constructed of foam with contoured features which support the frame of the flexible matrix. The flexible members of the flexible matrix extend across the expanse within the perimeter frame to provide a flexible support structure which can be used as a mattress, mattress foundation or both in combination.

A modular bed frame has ladder-like side frames with upper and lower side rails, and ladder-like end frames with upper and lower rails. The side and end frames telescopingly attach to the ends of upper and lower rounded corner rails. The insides of the side frames carry tubular upright fittings for increasing vertical rigidity. These fittings also provide upwardly opening tubular sleeves that receive right angle corner connectors on the ends of spaced apart and parallel horizontal slats that traverse the bed frame from end to end when assembled by a user. Separate upright rigid legs with feet on the bottom are slidably attached to downwardly opening tubular sleeves on the underside of the assembled frame structure to elevate the assembled bed foundation above the floor. A wrap around bed frame for use in supporting a box spring and mattress having side rails and cross members and a foot member that is affixed to the foot ends of the side rails to provide support for the foot end of the bedding. The entire bed frame can be assembled with fittings that do not require tools for assembly and thus, the bed frame can be assembled easily by the user by simply sliding or snapping the components together. Protective shields cover the bed frame so as to minimize harm to a person inadvertently striking one of the bed frame components. The foot member is comprised of an upper and lower member affixed together. There are also center wedges on the cross members where a foot can be affixed to the center wedge to facilitate assembly of the bed frame.

A connection system for use in joining structural members of a bed frame together. One of the structural members has a wedge and the other of the structural members has a cavity formed in a receiver. The wedge has a plurality of exterior surfaces that contact with a plurality of interior surfaces formed in the cavity. The wedge may be comprised of a plurality of wedge segments that enter into a plurality of openings in the receiver. The interfitting of the wedge into the receiver make a solid connection that is enhanced by weight of the bedding positioned thereon. The connection resists twisting forces as well as lateral and fore and aft forces.
