23 An improved structure for single-hand-operating umbrella EP86305309.6 1986-07-10 EP0252192A1 1988-01-13 Liu, Wang-Sheng

An umbrella includes ribs (07), supporting rods (05a, 05b) for placing a cloth cover thereon, connecting rods (06) for supporting the ribs, a main strut (01), and an inside control rod (10). The supporting rods are jointed and are connected with the ribs at the upper ends, and also with a holding ring (02) on the lower ends of the main strut. The connecting rods (06) ae installed between the supporting rods and a holding ring (04) which can move up and down on the main strut where the ribs are installed. The main strut (01) comprises a tube having an open-close control rod (10) inside which can also move up and down. A retractable spring (15) is installed at the end near the umbrella tail portion. An exposed pushable knuckle (100), a reed-dent or latch device (100a) and a latch-like snap pin (11) are disposed on the control rod. When the umbrella is opened, the snap pin is pressed into the strut interior by the slidable holding ring (04) and springs outside when the umbrella is closed. It will stay beneath the holding ring to prevent the ring from further sliding down or to prevent extra extending of the ribs. The open-close control rod (10) and slideable holding ring (04) are jointed together with a pin (14) which extends through aligned grooves (012) in the main strut provided for the slidable holding ring to move up and down. There are three openings (010a, 010b, 011) on the main strut which provides positioning for the knuckle, the reed-dent device and the snap pin with checking effect.

An umbrella includes: a flat upper notch formed on a top of a central shaft and a flat lower runner slidably held on the central shaft for pivotally securing a plurality of ribs between the upper notch and the lower runner, either the upper notch or lower runner having four ribs pivotally secured to a narrow right side portion of the upper notch or the lower runner, and having three ribs pivotally secured to a narrow left side portion of the upper notch or the lower runner, thereby decreasing the separating angle between every two opposite ribs disposed on a wide front or rear side portion of the upper notch or the lower runner for smoothening the folding operation when closing the umbrella and also for enhancing the strength of the umbrella ribs.
32 Closing mechanism used in a quadruple folding collapsible umbrella US09708550 2000-11-09 US06415805B1 2002-07-09 Shih-Shin Kuo
A closing mechanism used in an automatic quadruple folding collapsible umbrella is provided that comprises a pair of rollers and a round pin that cooperate with a rope to perform a closing operation. The pair of rollers is provided on one side of the umbrella runner. The round pin is disposed on the cap and orientated in the same direction as the rollers. With that mechanism, the rope extending from the interior of the umbrella rod passes to the outside through an opening in the cap to be routed around the rollers and the pin and finally tied to the cap. Thus the rope of the mechanism is longer, five times longer than the distance between the rollers and the round pin.
33 Retracting mechanism used in an automatic multiple collapsible umbrella US09524606 2000-03-14 US06332472B1 2001-12-25 Shih Shin Kuo
A retracting mechanism used in an automatic multiple collapsible umbrella. The mechanism primarily consists of a spring, one end of which is attached to a second umbrella stretcher and the other end connected to a flexible rib and an umbrella strut. When the umbrella is collapsed, the restoring force of the spring will directly urge umbrella stretchers and ribs to move toward the central umbrella rod. The mechanism of the invention can produce an effect of smoothly collapsing umbrellas with less acting force. In addition, there is only one hole required for the attachment of the umbrella strut and flexible rib. Thus it also has the effects of enhanced strength and shortened manufacturing processes.
34 Automatically spreading and collapsing umbrella US233568 1999-01-19 US6095170A 2000-08-01 Max Wang
An automatically spreading and collapsing umbrella includes a plurality of rib assemblies pivoted to a ferrule on a handle, and a plurality of stretcher assemblies. Each stretcher assembly is pivoted to a runner slidably sleeved on the handle to stretch or retract a respective rib assembly when the runner is moved. An anchored member has two ends journalled on a main rib of one of the rib assemblies, and a middle portion having an anchored site which is formed as a bent strip that is vaulted upwardly. A collapsing tension spring is retained between a connecting rod of one of the stretcher assemblies and the anchored site so as to define a collapsing line along an extending length of the spring. Stretching of the rib assemblies can extend the spring to store an elastic potential energy to facilitate collapsing of the rib assemblies. A resilient wire is connected to one end of the anchored member and an extending rib of one of the rib assemblies so as to actuate the extending rib to retract inwardly toward the handle when the rib assemblies are collapsed.
35 Self-opening and/or self-closing umbrella US651682 1996-05-21 US5816276A 1998-10-06 Joachim Seidel; Klaus Stiller
An umbrella includes an elongated stick for connecting a handle to a cano and an elastic-driven mechanism for controlling operation of the canopy between an open end position and a closed end position by moving a slide mechanism, which is linked to the canopy, relative to the stick. The elastic is set under tension when the canopy occupies one of the end positions to bias the slide mechanism so that the canopy seeks the other end position. A latch releasably locks the slide mechanism when the canopy occupies the one end position.

39 Self-closing umbrella US3729012D 1971-01-25 US3729012A 1973-04-24 WEBER H
A self-closing umbrella wherein there are two telescopic stick portions, a crown at the end of one stick portion with the dome ribs hinged thereto, a secondary crown fixed to the free end of the other telescopic stick portion, a runner adapted to slide on the other stick portion with stretcher means extending to the dome ribs and struts hinged to the stretcher means and to the second crown. A tension spring is arranged between the two telescopic stick portions so that when the umbrella stick is telescoped together, the dome ribs are opened and the tension spring is loaded. When the spring is released, the telescopic stick extends to its fullest extent and the dome ribs are closed on the stick.
40 Umbrella folding assembly US3680571D 1971-01-27 US3680571A 1972-08-01 HOUSTON JACK W
An umbrella folding assembly comprising a hollow support post, and a tubular actuating member slidably mounted for substantially vertical movement within the support post. The ribs for supporting the umbrella cover are pivotally connected at their upper, inner ends to the tubular actuating member. A coil spring disposed within the tubular actuating member serves to bias it in an upward direction for the purpose of effecting folding of the umbrella, and a plurality of detent members are pivotally mounted on the support post and are urged by spring members into a locking position within apertures of the support post and tubular actuating member so as to prevent the upward movement of the actuating member under the force of the spring. Folding of the umbrella can be manually effected by merely pivoting the detent members out of the locking position. Automatic folding of the umbrella is effected if it is subjected to winds of high velocity which cause the umbrella cover and ribs to bow upwardly, by providing a sleeve member that is slidably mounted on the support post beneath the detent members, the sleeve member being connected to the umbrella actuating rods which are connected at the other end to the ribs for the cover. Upon upward movement of the ribs, the sleeve member is moved upwardly into engagement with the detent members to move them out of the locking position, thereby resulting in upward movement of the tubular actuating member under the force of the spring and folding of the umbrella.
