Each rib assembly is coupled to the apex (80) of the shaft (20) at a proximal end and fixed to the canopy (25) at a distal end. The distal ends of each rib assembly points in the same direction when the canopy is collapsed end the collapsed rib assemblies are of substantially uniform length.
123 ELECTRICAL UMBRELLA AND CANOPY MECHANISM EP05736766.6 2005-05-01 EP1758479A2 2007-03-07 Amsel, Chaim Simcha
Canopy conducting mechanism for hand held umbrellas is disclosed. The canopy conducting mechanism is especially useful for electrical umbrellas although may be used for manually operated umbrellas as well. The canopy conducting mechanism has short movement between open and closed states of the umbrella and is based on pin and slide joints (2b, 4c) between the umbrella ribs (2) and between a canopy conducting member (4), allowing for strutless canopy (i.e. a canopy without stretchers extending between the umbrella post and the ribs). Umbrella rib having a flexible end especially useful for strutless umbrellas is also disclosed. Strutless electrical umbrella comprising said canopy conducting mechanism and flexible end ribs is also disclosed, including single-folding and multi-folding canopy embodiments.

133 Improved structure of triple-folding umbrella skeleton EP90113269.6 1990-07-11 EP0465706A1 1992-01-15 Su, Peter

5n7 A triple-folding umbrella skeleton includes a plurality sets of frame arranged around the middle tube (7) and pivotably mounted on the notch (71) and runner (72) respectively. Each frame set includes a first rib (1) a second rib (2), a third rib (3) a stretcher (4) and a first link (5). One end of the first rib (1) is pivotably mounted on the runner (72). The two ends of the second rib (2) is pivotably mounted to the other end of the first rib (1) and one end of the third rib (3) respectively. One end of the stretcher (4) is pivotably mounted on the notch (71), and the other end of the stretcher (4) is pivotably mounted to the first rib (1). The first link (5) is generally parallel to the first rib (1), and its two ends is pivotably mounted to a first entension portion (20) of the second rib and the stretcher (4) respectivley. The first line (5), the stretcher (4), the first rib (1) and the first extension portion (20) cooperate to form a quadric link structure. The triple-folding umbrella skeleton is characterized in that each frame set further includes a connecting spring (9) and a second link (8) generally parallel to the second rib (2). One end of the second link (3) is pivotably mounted to a second extension portion (30) of the third rib, and the other end of the second link is connected to the first rib (1) via the connecting spring (9). Whereby, each frame set can be expanded to a largest extent to obtain a largest canopy shielding area, and only a smaller force is needed to open the triple-folding umbrella skeleton, due to the retractability of the connecting spring.

Stem B consists of sections such as 14 and 19 which may be telescopic or screw together. Top piece A screws onto the top of the stem B before the umbrella is opened. Collar 3 is then lowered by sliding on the stem top-piece 1 so that support ribs 5, pivotally-attached to the collar 3, and main ribs 4, pivotally-attached to the flange 2 on the top-piece 1, swing outwards. Each main rib 4 is connected to a support rib 5 by a hinge 6, to which is also connected an extension rib 7. The extension ribs 7 are swung over to align with the main ribs 4 before the collar 3 is lowered to engage the latch on the stem B, causing the covering fabric 8 to be stretched and the main and extension ribs to adopt a bowed formation.
