43 Combination of a shade and rain umbrella with an emergency indication on the rain cover US11440320 2006-05-25 US20060207640A1 2006-09-21 Kevin Connelly
The invention is directed to a shade and rain combination. The basic umbrella includes a shaft having at its top expending ribs with peripheral points at the ends of the ribs. A woven mesh cover is attached to the ribs and is extending to the peripheral points and attached thereto. The mesh cover protects a person under the umbrella from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun while at the same time allowing ventilating air to pass there through. In the event of rain a water proof cover may be placed over the mesh cover to prevent rain water from passing there through. The rain cover is fastened at each of ribs at their peripheral point thereof. The shaft of the umbrella can be fastened in an upright position at objects having different orientations, that is, vertical or horizontal. One surface of the rain cover is used to indicate an emergency by displaying a bright color or by displaying the emergency words “HELP” or “SOS”.

An umbrella frame includes a hub, a center pole coupled to the hub for supporting the hub, and a plurality of ribs disposable into the hub. The ribs serve to extend, stretch or support the cover. The hub has a corresponding plurality of pairs of bores defined therein. One of the bores of each pair is used for deploying the ribs in a configuration to support the cover and the other for storing the ribs. One of the bores of the pair is inclined relative to a horizontal plane defined by the hub, and the other is vertical to a horizontal plane. Each rib has an end disposable into the hub and a spring lock to selectively lock into the hub. The pair of bores coact with the spring lock to selectively lock the rib in the bores in both the deployment and storage configurations.

The structure, for the radial deployment of branches (7) about a mast (1) bearing a slide (6, 8) mobile between a position of deployment and a position of folding of the branches (7), is noteworthy in that each branch (7) is mounted pivotally, at a predetermined intermediary pivot point (9), on one end of a retaining arm (4), working in extension upon the passage to the position of deployment, in order to hold the intermediate point (9) at a given distance from an apex (5) of the mast to which is connected an apical end of the arm (4), retention being exerted against the action of the slide (6, 8) moving away from the apex (5) an end, hinge mounted, controlling deployment of the branch (7).

49 Umbrella with special lining attached to underside of ribs to stabilize the ribs and permit easy removal of top canopy US765540 1991-09-25 US5226438A 1993-07-13 Emanuel Dubinsky
A garden umbrella with its underside covered with a lining material that is attached to the ribs. The lining material extends from the runner ribholder, that moves along the umbrella pole, across both the stretcher ribs and the canopy ribs to the ends of the ribs such that the underside of the umbrella is fully covered by the lining. Cloth tabs are sewn onto the lining at selected locations where spring clips secure the cloth tabs and lining to the stretcher ribs and canopy ribs, whereby the lining, the tabs and the clips act to stabilize the ribs from unwanted movement. The use of the lining permits employment of an easily removable umbrella canopy for servicing or replacement with other canopies. Also, the configuration of the lining across the underside of the umbrella is designed to provide a wind deflector which reduces the lift effect of wind against the bottom of the umbrella.
