A method of garment fitting, selection and creation is provided. The invention provides for the scanning of an individual to provide a photo-realistic virtual 3-D image of the individual in a physically simulated 3-D garment and provides for the use of measurements of the individual to intelligently recommend garments, produce patterns for custom made garments, provide alteration suggestions to fit a garment to the particular individual. The measurements and the photo-realistic 3-D information is stored so that an individual does not need to re-input information or undergo multiple scans, and can shop from home using the previously obtained information profile. Measurements and suggestions can be used by the individual or automatically sent to a manufacturer, dressmaker or tailor for the creation or alteration of a garment to achieve a correct fit for the individual. |

A device includes first and second scales. The first scale has a reference mark, at least one first mark disposed a first distance from the reference mark in a first direction, and at least one second mark disposed the first distance from the reference mark in a second direction that is opposite to the first direction. The second scale is perpendicular to the first scale and includes at least one third mark disposed a second distance from the first scale. One can use such a device to position items on a uniform or other back piece without the guesswork associated with conventional measuring devices. For example, he/she can use the first scale as a centering scale to locate a pocket midline, and then, without having to move the device, can use the second scale as a measuring scale to locate a point along the pocket midline. Therefore, such a multi-scale device allows one to place an item such as a badge above the pocket more quickly and in a less cumbersome manner than a conventional measuring device would typically allow. |

A garment measuring device comprises a standard body resembling a human body and a plurality of contact pieces of curved planes provided with a sensor for detecting the contact pressure exerted by the garment and protrusibly disposed at necessary positions of the standard body. With this device, measurement of a given garment is effected by putting the garment on the standard body, allowing the contact pieces to protrude from the standard body until they reach the garment, and calculating the sizes of the garment on the basis of the amounts of protrusion of the contact pieces. |

Measurements of the body can be taken by the apparatus automatically, rapidly and with the desired accuracy without permitting direct contact of any measuring element with the body. |

A system for measuring dimensions and/or other internal properties of a shoe, garment or other object of interest is described. The system includes a fixture having a measurement tip. When the tip is placed inside of the object of interest, a processor collects positional data from the fixture to develop a three-dimensional mode! of the interior of the object. If the measurement tip includes one or more pressure sensors, the processor may collect pressure data and use the pressure data to include stretch properties in the three-dimensional model. |

Methods and systems for modelling and modifying garments, providing a basis for integrated "virtual tailoring" systems and processes. The garment models provided relate specific design points of the garment to specific body regions in terms of explicit 3D relationship rules, enabling garments to be modified holistically, by a constrained 3D warp process, to fit different body shapes/sizes, either in order to generate a range of graded sizes or made-to-measure garments, for the purposes of visualisation and/or garment production. The methods described further facilitate the generation of 2D pattern pieces by flattening 3D representations of modified garments using a constrained internal energy minimization process, in a manner that ensures that the resulting pattern pieces can be assembled in substantially the same way as those of the base garment. The mehtods enable the visualisation and/or production of bespoke or graded garments, and garment design modifications, within an integrated virtal tailoring environment. |

A customer body scan is used to produce a body model. The body model is matched to the best fitting one of a family of standard body models. In one arrangement, that family is a series of standard size models. In another arrangement, the family is a series of body shapes. In both cases, difference values are derived which are used to modify standard pattern pieces. Closed manifold mesh models may be used throughout to simplify computation. |
