151 WOVEN OR KNITTED CLOTH CONTAINING TWO DIFFERENT YARNS AND EXHIBITING REDUCTION OF INTERSTITIAL RATE IN BECOMING WET EP04747953 2004-07-20 EP1650335A4 2006-10-04 YASUI SATOSHI; MIZOHATA SEIJI; YAMAGUCHI TAKESHI
A woven or knitted cloth formed from two different yarns being different from each other in the self elongation due to water absorption, which comprises a yarn (1) exhibiting a high self elongation due to water absorption and having an average yarn length (A) and a yarn (2) being arranged in the same direction as that for the yarn (1), exhibiting a self elongation lower than that of the yarn (1) and having an average yarn length (B), wherein a yarn length ratio (A/B) is greater than 0.9, and which exhibits the reduction of an interstitial ratio when it becomes wet.
152 CALENDERED FABRICS FOR ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT PROTECTION EP02710112.0 2002-01-24 EP1354086B1 2005-10-12 WOODS, Malcolm
The invetnion provides a garment comprising at least a region consisting of a single thickness of a fabric comprising synthetic polymer filaments, wherein the fabric has been calendered on at least one surface thereof and the fabric has an ultraviolet protection factor as determined according to AATCC Test Method 183-1999 of at least 30. The invention also provides a layered fabric comprising a layer of the above fabric to provide UV protection and a layer of a second fabric or film such as a material that is sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. The invention also provides a process to prepare an ultraviolet light protective fabric comprising the steps of: forming a fabric from one or more multifilament yarns and calendering the fabric; followed by measuring the Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of the calendered fabric by AATCC Test Method 183-1998.

Wrinkled fabrics comprising ultraviolet absorbers are disclosed which provide improvements in ultraviolet transmission, wearer comfort, and cost over those of the prior art. The preferred fabric is polyester and the preferred UV absorbers are chlorobenzotriazoles. The polyester is wrinkled permanently so as to provide an extra barrier to ultraviolet radiation from solely utilizing UV absorbers alone. This wrinkled product is also more comfortable to a wearer, particularly in warm weather or hotter climates. Other non-apparel uses are also contemplated including tents, awnings, and crowd covers. A method of making such a fabric is also disclosed comprising stuffing a jet dyeing machine with a more than normal load amount of fabric and eventually heat setting such resultant wrinkles into the finished product.

156 Sunbathing filter with incomplete UV-B absorption EP87202173 1987-11-06 EP0267655A3 1988-07-27 Longstaff, Eric

Apparatus for use in sunbathing comprises a screen formed of a sheet of thermoplastic or fiber material which is transparent to the safe UV-A wavelengths of solar radiation and the visible light range between 400-450 nm but which contains uniformly distributed therethrough a first agent which absorbs at least 80% of the UV-B radiation in the 310-320 nm range and all radiation below 310 nm and a second agent and third agent which prevent transmission therethrough of some radiations above 450 nm wavelength, i.e. visible light and infra-red. The second agent may be an absorbing dye or pigment. The third agent may be finely divided carbon or ground glass. The screen may be mounted on a frame or fabricated into clothing so as to shield the sunbather from the acutely and chronically harmful wavelengths of radiation, to prevent unpleasant overheating, and to provide subdued lighting. The relatively small amount of UV-B transmitted through the material stimulates the production of new melanin in a sunbather, and this melanin will be later available for tanning by UV-A radiation.
