141 Elastic fabric material for home use and method of employing same in the reconstruction and construction of garments US3732576D 1971-06-17 US3732576A 1973-05-15 GUTHIER M
A fabric material for use as an elastic waistband for garments and primarily for the home repair of garments. The material consists of factory-prepared lengths of narrow fabrics having stretchable elastic bands, of less width than the fabric, secured adjacent a margin of the fabric by lines of stitches of a character to preserve the stretch characteristics of the band. In the method of employing the material, as in the repairing of a garment having a defective waistband, the original waistband is severed from the remainder of the garment and a free margin of the length of material is sewn to the margin of the remainder of the garment defined by the severed edge. This requires only the stitching of cloth to cloth thus avoiding the sewing of an elastic band to cloth, an operation which the usual home sewing machine is not equipped to perform. The fabric material may also be employed in the home construction of new garments and may be supplied with, or without, other materials in the form of a kit.

The garment, and particularly each of the pair of legs of the garment, is made of an abrasive resistant fabric, such as aramid fibers, in particular, KEVLAR®, and is preferably made in a woven or knitted pattern so as to be soft to the touch and breathable so that the garment is comfortable to wear under clothing. Stirrups may be attached at the bottom of each leg to prevent movement of the reinforced areas in the event of a fall.

A resilient band (10') for use with articles of apparel, the band is formed with a first fabric (14) operably secured to a strip of more resilient material that is preferably a second fabric (16) such as powermesh or the like. The band is formed by stretching the first fabric and resilient material (16) into a stretched position and operably securing the two materials together with a fastening structure (36). Preferably, the fastening structure is a plurality of space-apart stitching lines (40) that are parrellely aligned with each other and substantially perpendicularly aligned with the longitudinal length (30) of the band.

A garment or hose retaining system comprises an elasticised retaining band (83) extending in use around a rear position (83a) of a wearer's anatomy and a front portion (83b) extending in use at least partially across a front portion of the wearer's anatomy. The rear portion (83a) has a modulus of elasticity extending generally longitudinally and parallel to its upper and lower boundaries. The front portion (83b) comprises a generally downwardly extending arcuate concave curve (85) in an upper boundary, and has a greater modulus of elasticity in a transverse direction than longitudinally of the front portion.
