21 Apparatus and method for conditioning a tobacco mass EP82301891.6 1982-04-08 EP0063892A1 1982-11-03 Beard, Hoyt S.; Woempner, Marvin G.; Williard, Daniel G.

Dry, compacted masses of tobacco 46 are conditioned by inserting an array of parallel perforated probes 72 into the mass and passing high pressure steam through the probes and probe perforations 90 into the tobacco mass as the probes are inserted and withdrawn. The conditioning apparatus includes a frame 13 supporting a probe array and a ram 56 for moving the array toward and away from a tobacco mass supported by a conveyor 22. The probes are flexibly mounted to prevent bending, and extend through a stripper plate 140 which is supported from the array by way of a latching mechanism 146. The stripper plate holds the tobacco mass in place to prevent lifting of the mass upon withdrawal of the probes.

PURPOSE: To shred tobacco without requiring any much energy consumption or device by shredding tobacco at specified humidity and the bottom temperature of peripheral temperature inside a tobacco shredder. CONSTITUTION: The tobacco compressed in a veil or its section is heated to 30-60°C, preferably, 40-50°C and humidified to the humidity of 10-17%, preferably, 13-16%. Next, after a cancel process is performed as desired while keeping conditions after heating and humidifying almost at a minimum, the tobacco is shredded into shredded tobacco by the shredder. 30 METHOD FOR HUMIDIFYING STARTING TOBACCO MATERIAL EP12871593 2012-03-15 EP2798965A4 2015-11-11 SARAYA AKIRA; MIYAMORI SHINOBU; IWAI RYUJI; ITO NAOKI; TAKANO HIROAKI
A moisture conditioning method is provided in which tobacco material and steam are supplied to the interior of a rotor to condition the moisture of the tobacco material while the tobacco material passes through the rotor. In the conditioning method, a deviation between the temperature of the tobacco material at the outlet of the rotor and a target temperature is obtained, and cascade control is performed on the supply flow rate of the steam supplied to the rotor so as to eliminate the deviation. The cascade control includes a main control process having a plurality of control areas for controlling the supply flow rate based on a reference flow rate in the individual control areas, and a sub-control process executed in parallel with the main control process for changing the reference flow rate in accordance with an average value of the deviations within a fixed period.

A system, apparatus and method is proposed according to which a tobacco mass is proportioned for primary processing. The system and method provide for a controlled selection handling and proportioning of the tobacco mass, and for conditioning of the tobacco mass before further primary processing. The apparatus provides for conditioning an entire tobacco mass or for selected proportioning of the tobacco mass into smaller predetermined portions prior to conditioning. The system and method allow for blending different types of tobacco masses while utilizing the proportioning apparatus on selected tobacco masses.

37 Sliced bale conditioning EP85302293.7 1985-04-02 EP0159836A1 1985-10-30 Fisk, Cedric Joseph; Allen, Edward James

Apparatus for slicing tobacco bales for conditioning in which the bales are moved from a conveyor (2) onto an adjacent lift device (16) by a first pusher (6), and are then sliced by a slicing blade (20) which is moved horizontally into engagement with the top of the bale and slices the bale whilst the lift device is dropped slightly to assist in cleaving the bale. The lift is then actuated to raise the bale ready for the next slicing operation, after the previous slice has been ejected by a second pusher (22).

Bales of compressed tobacco ribs and/or tobacco leaf laminae having a moisture content of 8-11 percent are advanced past a battery of microwave generators or through one or more electric high frequency fields to raise the temperature of particles in the bales to between 30.degree. and 90.degree. C. The bales or portions of the bales are thereupon loosened, prior to complete cooling back to starting temperature, by the pins of a conveyor which delivers the particles of loosened bales or portions of bales into the magazine of a shredding machine wherein the particles are cut. The moisture content of shreds is raised to 12-13.5 percent at which the shreds are ready for processing into smokers' products, or above 13.5 percent, for example, to between 21 and 30 percent. Such moisturizing to above the processing moisture content is or can be followed by drying of the shreds.
40 Method and apparatus for making tobacco shreds US286355 1988-12-19 US5025813A 1991-06-25 Reinhard Liebe; Waldemar Wochnowski
Bales or portions of bales of relatively dry compressed tobacco leaf laminae or ribs are heated microwaves, or in an to a temperature not less than 50.degree. C., and are immediately admitted into a shredding machine without previous cooling and/or breaking up. The moisture content of the shreds is raised to between 12 and 13.5% for admission into a cigarette maker, or such moisture content is raised well above the optimum value for further processing in order to increase the filling power of the shreds. The shreds are thereupon dried to reduce their moisture content to between 12 and 13.5% prior to conversion into the filler of a cigarette rod. Two or more different types of shreds can be mixed prior to admission into the cigarette maker. The rate at which the shredding machine discharges a stream of shreds is kept constant by monitoring the density of successive bales or portions of bales and by regulating the speed at which the bales or portions of bales are delivered to the shredding station in dependency on the mass of the respective bales or portions of bales.
