21 Apparatus and method for blocking flame and spreading heated gas from a broiler flue US13051607 2011-03-18 US09638427B2 2017-05-02 Robert J. Reese; Gregory K. Swanson; Daryl R. Monroe; Douglas M. Lewis
Apparatus for substantially blocking flames and spreading heated gases emitted from a broiler flue. The apparatus includes a riser placed above the broiler flue for defining a pathway along which heated gases are exhausted from the flue, a catalyst support on the riser for supporting a catalyst in the pathway for flow of heated gases through the catalyst from a bottom surface of the catalyst to a top surface of the catalyst, and a plurality of baffles in the riser extending across the pathway below the catalyst support. The baffles have the shape of inverted troughs.
22 Device for protecting a container or a conduit from an explosion US13216797 2011-08-24 US09415249B2 2016-08-16 Bernhard Penno
A device inhibiting propagation of explosions using a pipe having an inlet and an outlet. The inlet is connectable to a container to be protected or to a conduit to be protected. The device further includes a mechanism for building up a pressure difference so that a higher pressure is generated in a first region of the pipe located upstream of the outlet in the direction of the inlet and a lower pressure is generated in a second region located upstream of the first region in the direction of the inlet.
23 FACILITY FOR PRODUCING AND TREATING SMOKE US14767101 2014-02-12 US20160030783A1 2016-02-04 Jose COUSSEAU; Philippe ROUSSEAU
A fume production and treatment installation includes:a fume generator including at least one burner, a combustion chamber having at least one combustion hearth, and a fume exhaust outlet; and a confinement enclosure for confining the fumes produced by the fume generator, which enclosure has an inlet connected to the fume exhaust outlet for removing fumes from the combustion chamber, and an outlet connected to the fume generator via a fume recirculation circuit, the discharge from which into the combustion chamber being referred to as the “fume feed head”. The combustion chamber has a protective screen, interposed between the combustion hearth and the fume feed head, for protecting the feed head from the flame of the burner, the inlet for the fumes into the confinement enclosure is disposed in the upper third of the enclosure, and the confinement enclosure is equipped with a closable exhaust outlet for removing condensates.
24 Explosion protection venting system US10719436 2003-11-21 US06908377B2 2005-06-21 Robert C. Knyrim; Timothy F. Simmons
An explosion protection venting system has a plurality of vessels or reactors connected by a common vent line. A flame front diverter having a pair of opposing rupturable discs is connected to each one of a plurality of vessels for directing a deflagration away from the normal flow path and through an alternate path that prevents damage to nearby structure.
25 Method for monitoring environmental conditions in restricted spaces US09479393 2000-01-06 US06625934B1 2003-09-30 James J. McGrath, III
An environmental detection system is particularly suited for elevator hoistways and other locations where access is difficult or restricted. The inventive system comprises a fire rated access cage which is disposed within the hoistway in a desired location, and is securely attached to an associated access panel, which is fire protection rated and positioned to extend through a wall defining the hoistway. An environmental sensing device, such as a smoke detector or heat sensor, is secured within the cage so that it is disposed within the hoistway, and can freely detect any smoke or excessive heat present in the hoistway because of a large number of apertures in the walls of the cage. The resultant system, thus, is constructed so that authorized personnel can access the environmental sensing unit conveniently through the access panel door from an adjacent hallway or room to test or maintain it, without shutting down the associated elevator or compromising the effectiveness of the unit.
26 Flash suppressor for hot water heater US09577530 2000-05-24 US06290490B1 2001-09-18 Jeffrey Cacace
A flash suppressor for surrounding a gas-fired appliance, comprising a barrier for forming an enclosure around a lower portion of the appliance. The barrier has an inside wall, an outside wall and a space between the inside and outside walls. The outside wall has at least one aperture for air to pass into the space. The inside wall has a plurality of ventilation holes to allow heat currents to escape through the space and causes a siphoning effect, thus preventing any fumes from reaching the flame. There is a filter disposed in the space for filtering fumes from outside the outside wall to prevent the fumes from reaching the appliance and igniting from a spark from the appliance. There is an outwardly extending flange surrounding a top edge of the barrier. The flange has an inside wall connected to the inside wall of the barrier, an outside wall connected to the outside wall of the barrier, and a space between the inside and outside walls that communicates with the space in the barrier. The flange has an open top, so that fumes travel through the filter and out the open top and are thus kept away from the flame in the appliance.
27 Chimney safety and control system US324242 1994-10-17 US5555876A 1996-09-17 Richard V. Francisco, Jr.; Jack E. Farrell, III
A chimney safety and control system includes a control panel which indicates the position of the chimney damper and the operational status of a chimney fan unit, and allows the operator to electro-mechanically open and close the damper and set the fan. When the safety control system senses that a predetermined condition (e.g., high temperature) exists in the chimney firebox while the damper is closed, it automatically opens the damper and activates the fan. The system may also be used in conjunction with one or more smoke detectors, in which case the system automatically opens the damper and activates the fan when a smoke detector is activated.
28 Fire preventing duct system US85839 1993-07-06 US5493820A 1996-02-27 Michael A. Joseph
A duct system contains a narrow, liquid tight conduit filled with cold water which can be used to prevent fires in the ducts of chimneys, high rise buildings, restaurants and the like. If a fire starts in a duct, the wall of the duct heats up very slowly because of its proximity to the thin walled conduit containing the cold water (which gets warmer as the fire builds momentum). If the fire persists and the heat of the outer wall rises to a designated temperature (e.g. 200 degrees Fahrenheit), a valve opens and the heated water (the originally cold water) is flushed out and fresh cold water is brought in, further impeding the fire's progress. The fire will likely burn itself out without ever igniting any combustibles outside the duct walls. The flushed out water can be sprayed onto the roof of the building to prevent any burning fly ash from starting a fire on the roof.
29 Chimney by-pass US176322 1988-03-31 US4821473A 1989-04-18 Ernest E. Cowell
A chimney by-pass is disclosed for use with a main chimney. In case of a chimney fire, a movable damper closes off the main chimney, substantially reducing the severity of the chimney fire. The movable damper also opens an auxiliary chimney, allowing smoke to exit, uninterrupted through the auxiliary chimney, and may include a fan to assist the exit of smoke into the atmosphere. The movable damper may be actuated manually or automatically in case of a chimney fire.
30 Apparatus for the prevention of fire spreading within the feeding channel leading into the fire chamber of a furnace for solid fuel US311867 1981-10-15 US4385569A 1983-05-31 Hans Grossniklaus
The furnace has a feeding channel (4) through which firewood is transported into a fire chamber (3). A steam pipe (10) leads into the channel (4). Through said pipe (10), steam is introduced into the solid fuel material in bursts as soon as a certain temperature is exceeded within the said channel (4). The steam increases the humidity in the air and the moisture of the firewood, thereby reliably preventing a spreading of the fire within the feeding channel (4), without simultaneously impairing combustion within the fire chamber (3).
