A head unit for a personal protection system is described. A first support extends upwardly from the head band to said ventilation unit shell for supporting said ventilation unit above the head of the wearer. A front conduit extends between the ventilation unit and the front nozzle, a rear conduit extends between the ventilation unit and the rear nozzle, and at least one fastening member is attached to the head band for suspending a hood over the head unit so that a face shield integral with the hood is disposed forward of the head band front section and the front nozzle. The first support is adapted to flex relative to the head band. The head unit further comprises a fastening assembly integral with the ventilation unit shell and the first support, the fastening assembly adapted to hold the ventilation unit to the first support at a plurality of different locations along said first support so that the position of said ventilation unit relative to the front nozzle is adjustable. The front conduit is adjustable in at least one of length or angle so that, when the position of said ventilation unit relative to said front nozzle is adjusted, said front conduit maintains a connection between said ventilation unit and said front nozzle, and the rear conduit is adjustable in at least one of length or angle so that, when the position of said ventilation unit relative to said rear nozzle is adjusted, said rear nozzle maintains a connection between said shell and said rear nozzle.
