35 Combination weeding tool US09915389 2001-07-26 US20020030370A1 2002-03-14 Raymond J. Novotny
A weeding tool with a combination of attachments integrated with a fulcrum to remove specific types of weeds based on their root structure. The attachments remove weeds whose roots are characterized as lengthy single-type roots, medium-depth bushy-hair type roots and near-surface vine-type roots. A fulcrum slidably attached to the tool handle ergonomically assists the gardener in extracting weeds by limiting angular rotation of the handle. The fulcrum may be used to apply foot pressure in penetrating hard soil. The fulcrum slides on the tool handle with respect to the end of the lifting blade to vary its penetration depth and is used for extracting single-type weed roots at different depths. The multiple-tine rake rotatably attached to the fulcrum is snapped into position and spring-biased to remain in position for extracting weeds having medium-depth bushy roots. The cultivator bar rotatably attached to the fulcrum is snapped into position for near-surface weed removal or general soil tilling. A crevice blade, rotatably attached to the fulcrum removes weeds between the gaps of patio paving blocks and the like, is snapped into position for this task. Most of these attachments can be combined onto one tool or other combinations integrated with the slidably attached fulcrum.
36 Shovel with pivoting head US106326 1998-06-29 US5984393A 1999-11-16 Rodney H. Washington
A shovel assembly having a shovel head and a handle shaft. The handle shaft has a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of the handle shaft propagates along a longitudinal axis. A pivot joint is interposed between the shovel head and the handle shaft. The pivot joint selectively enables the shovel head to rotate about the longitudinal axis. The pivot joint is configurable into three distinct conditions. In a first condition, the pivot joint rigidly couples the shovel head to the handle shaft. In a second condition, the pivot joint enables the shovel head to rotate around the longitudinal axis of the handle shaft in a first direction. Lastly, in a third condition, the pivot joint enables the shovel head to rotate around the longitudinal axis of the handel shaft in a second direction. A manual control is provided on the shovel for selectively configuring the pivot joint between the first condition, the second condition and the third condition.

38 Garden tool sleeve US553971 1995-11-07 US5641237A 1997-06-24 Barry R. Albert; Christopher T. Rich
A sleeve for coupling a tool to a handle includes a collar, a shank and a pair of resilient clips. The collar defines proximal and distal ends, and includes an exterior surface which converges from the proximal end toward the distal end. In addition, the collar includes a central bore for receiving a shaft of the tool. In an especially preferred form, the central bore is so dimensioned as to fit closely around a shaft of the tool. In addition, the exterior surface of the collar meets an interior surface of the central bore at a right or acute angle. Then, the portion of the exterior surface of the collar near the juncture with the interior surface of the central bore acts as a knife edge to scrape deposits such as caked mud from the shaft of the tool as the shaft is inserted into the sleeve. The sleeve is preferably formed from a weather-resistant plastic and the proximal end of the collar preferably has an outer diameter greater than an outer diameter of an adjacent portion of the shank so as to provide some protection to an end of the handle against corrosion due to exposure to the elements.
