An articulating bed which incorporates a support frame (10) for an articulating section (12) having a seat section (14) and an upper body support section (18). An actuator (52) with a ram (56) is pivotally attached to the upper body support section with a bracket (55). A lumbar actuation lever (58) is pivotally attached to the ram (56) and extends from a torque tube (60) rotatable in bearing blocks (62) mounted to the upper body support section (18). Angle arms (64) extend from the torque tube (60) and are attached to a lumbar support element (30) through apertures (66) in the upper body support section (18). The lumbar support element is retracted against the upper body support section with the ram in a first position creating minimal deflection in a lumbar region of a mattress supported on the upper body support section. The torque tube is rotated with the ram in a second position extending the angle arms through apertures to elevate the lumbar support element. A second actuator (70) having a second ram (76) is pivotally supported by a second bracket (74) extending from a brace element (44) of an actuation mechanism of the upper body support section. A head support bracket (78) is pivotally attached to the second ram (76) and mounted to a neck angle adjustment section (32). The neck angle adjustment section is aligned with the upper body support section with the second ram in a first position. The bracket is urged to rotate the neck angle adjustment section about hinge elements to provide an angled head and neck position with respect to the upper body support section with the second ram in a second position.

This application relates to operating tables and accessories designed to facilitate surgical procedures on a limb, especially, but not exclusively, orthopaedic procedures involving the distraction, dislocation or replacement of a joint. A such accessory includes a table-mounted component (200) including a patient support (103) and a floor-standing component (200) including an articulated limb support beam (205). Cooperating locating features including a notch 118 and guide channels (217) on the two components locate the components relative to each other. They are designed so that with the patient support (103) supporting at least some of the weight of the patient, the articulated limb support beam (205) is properly positioned to support and manipulate the limb. Moreover, they are so configured as to allow the table to be tilted relative to the floor-standing component (200) while continuing to locate the components relative to each other.
