Apparatus for efficiently routing facsimiles to and from a plurality of facsimile devices (62, 64, 66). At least one BRI line (16) is coupled to several ISDN terminals (21-28). At least one multiplexer (31, 32) is coupled to the outputs of the terminals (21-28). A fax server (50) is coupled to the outputs of the multiplexers (31, 32), typically via fax process computers (41, 42). Coupled to the fax server (50) are a plurality of facsimile devices (62, 64, 66), each having a unique fax number. A given facsimile device (62, 64, 66) may send or receive more than one facsimile simultaneously by means of programming its fax number into more than one terminal (21-28) address. A terminal (21-28) may be coupled to more than one multiplexer (31, 32). Multiple BRI lines (16) may be used. The fax server (50) preferably contains an incoming generic module (51) that interacts with all incoming facsimiles, an incoming specific module (53) that interacts with facsimiles destined for selected ones of the facsimile devices (62, 64, 66), an outgoing generic module (52) that interacts with all outgoing facsimiles, and an outgoing specific module (54) that interacts with outgoing facsimiles that emanate from selected ones of the facsimile devices (62, 64, 66).

A subscriber system (10), operating in combination with other similar subscriber systems, for collectively and swiftly distributing multiple copies of digital data to a large number of other subscriber systems. The subscriber system (10) receives digital data and stores it on a storage device (38). An autonomous digital data communication subsystem (42) then obtains a copy of the digital data directly from the storage device (30) and transmits that data to another subscriber system. The autonomous digital data communication subsystem (42) includes transceivers (72, 82, 102 or 104) for exchanging digital data with ISDN communication channels (46, 44a, 44b or 44c). The transceivers (72, 82, 102 or 104) receive the digital data from a random access memory ("RAM") (56) included in the autonomous digital data communication subsystem (42). A SCSI controller (52) exchanges the digital data between the RAM (56) and the storage device (38) of the subscriber system (10). A control signal processor controls the operation of the autonomous digital data communication subsystem (42) including its transceivers (72, 82, 102 and 104).

One, or more, ISDN interfaces have their reach extended without violating ISDN interface standards by a method which converts ISDN coded information which is to be delivered over an extended channel into binary coded data prior to transmission, transmitting the binary coded information to a receiver at an extended location and there, after storage, and assembly, converting the binary coded data into ISDN specific coded data for delivery to an ISDN interface.

The technical field of the invention generally concerns systems for receiving and transmitting compressed video and audio data. In particular, a subscriber system (10) includes a communication subsystem (12) to receive compressed data from and transmit compressed data to a ISDN primary access line (14) utilizing the "bandwidth on demand" feature of that communication channel. The communication subsystem (12) separates received compressed data into compressed video data and compressed audio data. Within the subscriber system (10), the compressed video data is transmitted to a programmable video data format conversion subsystem (28) for decompression and production of a visible image on a CRT (82). Similarly, compressed audio data is transmitted to a programmable audio data format conversion subsystem (192) for decompression and production of an audible sound on a speaker (262). Compressed data of visible images and audible sounds may also be obtained with and transmitted from the subscriber system (10).

The technical field of the invention generally concerns systems for audiovisual teleservices using digital telecommunication services such as Integrated Services Digital Network ("ISDN") communications. In the preferred embodiment, an interface subsystem (100) includes an ISDN interface circuit (130) for concurrently exchanging audiovisual information with an ISDN access. The interface subsystem (100) also includes a host computer interface circuit (144)for exchanging video, audio, high-speed, a low-speed data with a host digital computer. A computer program executed by a digital signal processing circuit (122) implements CCITT's H.221 and H.242 Recommendations for audiovisual teleservices, and provides a computer program at the application layer (44) of the OSI model that is executed by the host digital computer with an interface by which it can exchange video, audio, high-speed, and low-speed data with another compatible terminal using digital telecommunications.

PURPOSE: To send/receive a facsimile signal from/to plural facsimile equipments efficiently by providing a multiplexer, a facsimile server and the plural facsimile equipments in a premises of a customer. The computers 41, 42 conduct image conversion to convert data into a format capable of being recognized by receiver side facsimile equipments 62, 64, 66. The computers 41, 42 introduce a delay to transmission and transfer of received and sent facsimile signals by the facsimile server 50 to revise physical positions of the receiver side facsimile equipments 62, 64, 66.
