23 Tools and methods for retrieving buried coins and other treasure US10858604 2004-06-02 US20050269112A1 2005-12-08 Kenneth Michael
A “sod saver” tool for digging to acquire an object buried in the ground, and a non-metallic scraping tool utilized when carefully examining the soil. The sod saver tool includes a main cylindrical body rotated about its longitudinal axis for digging a substantially cylindrical plug of soil from the ground, the object being contained in the plug of soil, and a plurality of circumferentially-disposed resilient non-metallic fingers located at a bottom portion of the main cylindrical body. When the digging of the plug is being performed, the resilient fingers tend to spread radially outward from the longitudinal axis of the main cylindrical body, being deflected away from directly hitting and scratching the buried object, tend to generally direct the soil upwardly into the main cylindrical body, and tend to cause the plug to be substantially-compacted and cylindrical. The compacted plug may be easily reinserted into a hole in the ground. The sod saver tool also includes a rod with markings for setting a digging level, with a retractable cutting tool with teeth attached to the rod.

26 Electrically powered earth corer US875789 1997-07-30 US5865259A 1999-02-02 Christopher John Dignet Catto
An electrically powered earth coring device may be used to remove weeds from lawns or flower beds. The device comprises a hollow shaft 3 having a handle 1 and a hollow cylindrical cutter 5, extensible from the lower end of the shaft to penetrate the ground around the root of a weed 34 and create a core of earth. When a preset depth has been reached, the cutter 5 is retracted in order to remove the core of earth and the weed from the ground. A plunger 16, mounted inside the shaft 3, pushes the core of earth out of the cutter as the latter is retracted. Opposing claws may be mounted pivotally at the lower end of the cutter 5 in order to grip the root of the weed. The coring device may also be used for planting bulbs.
27 Posthole digger and cleaning attachment US966625 1997-11-10 US5836630A 1998-11-17 Ronald Glenn Putnam, Jr.
A posthole digger has first and second spaced-apart, substantially upright, pivotably attached handles. First and second cooperating scoops extend from respective proximal ends of the handles. The scoops are moveable between a generally open position for penetrating the ground surface, and a generally closed position for excavating. A cleaning attachment includes a stationary hollow sleeve attached adjacent the proximal ends of the handles. An elongate slide rod is received within the sleeve and extends between the handles for sliding vertical movement relative to the handles. An inner scraper is attached to an end of the slide rod, and is positioned between the first and second scoops. A spring engages the slide rod and normally urges the inner scraper upwardly into a storage position adjacent a top end of the scoops. A foot extension is formed with the inner scraper and is depressed by the foot of a user against the force of the spring to move the inner scraper downwardly along the length of the scoops. An outer scraper is secured to the foot extension and resides in closely-spaced relation to an outside surface of the scoops. The outer scraper is movable in unison with the inner scraper to clean away accumulated earthen matter from inside and outside surfaces of the scoops in the open position.
28 Compost aerator and monitor US673507 1996-07-01 US5765437A 1998-06-16 Paul A. Farber
A compost aerator and monitor which has a cylindrical helical screw, preferably with a sharpened first end. The diameter of the cylindrical helix and the tightness of the windings are selected so as, when the screw is inserted into a compost pile, to create a core of compost material that is sufficiently large to be cohesive and representative but not so large that the weight of the core will cause the core to fall from the screw when such screw is withdrawn from the compost pile. Attached to the second end of the screw is a handle with sufficient leverage to enable the screw to be turned rapidly and, consequently, rapidly introduced into a compost pile and to preclude the screw from rotating as the screw is withdrawn from the pile, thereby retaining the core of compost material. Optionally, either a traditional brace or a traditional power drill can replace the simple handle; and a shaft can be inserted between the screw and the handle or the brace. The handle or brace may be either permanently or removably attached to the screw or the shaft, while the power drill is removably connected to the screw or the shaft.
29 Post hole digger US675460 1996-06-12 US5669648A 1997-09-23 Michael Lewis Luck
An improved post hole digger which comprises a plurality of elongated arm members having a proximal end and a distal end and an inner surface and an outer surface. A sharpened shovel blade is secured to the distal end of each of the elongated arm members, and a hinge pivotally secures the sharpened shovel blades to each other. A detachable top plate assembly is affixed to the proximal end of the elongated arm members and allows a user to strike the improved post hole digger with a weighted object such as a sledge hammer in order to drive the sharpened shovel blades into the ground. A handle bar is secured perpendicular to the outer surface of each elongated arm member at the proximal end of the elongated arm member, and a foot peg is secured perpendicular to the outer surface of each elongated arm member at the distal end, thus allowing a user to alternatively drive the sharpened shovel blades into the ground by holding the improved post hole digger by the handle bars so that the sharpened shovel blades point into the ground, and then jumping upon the foot pegs.
30 Garden hand tool US600290 1996-02-12 US5615744A 1997-04-01 Edward G. Krafka
A garden hand tool having a tubular outer member terminating at its bottom end in an elliptically shaped peripheral edge with such end being open, a plunger reciprocally mounted in the tubular member and a spring that resiliently biases the plunger upwardly in a direction away from the elliptically shaped open bottom end. The elliptically shaped peripheral edge is preferably in a plane disposed at an angle in a range of 15.degree. to 22.degree.1/2 to the longitudinal axis of the tubular member so as to be readily forced by hand into the earth to remove a weed or plant. The plunger projects upwardly beyond the upper end of the tubular outer member providing a portion that can be readily grasped to push the plunger downwardly to remove any earth associated with the plant that might be stuck in the bottom end of the outer tubular member.
31 Transplanting tool US72894 1993-06-07 US5398624A 1995-03-21 Francois Caron
A transplanting tool for the manual extraction and planting of seedlings. The transplanting tool comprises, a digging tube, a hollow plunger slidably contained within said digging tube, a stem and a transverse piece forming a handle, and a pair of foot bars extending from the outside surface of said digging tube, at substantially opposite direction from one another. The arrangement of the components therefrom, offers a clear line of sight at the center of the hollow plunger for placing the digging tube over a seedling without damaging the plant's foliage. The angle of the foot bars is adapted to prevent strain on the user's leg, thereby facilitating altering between digging and walking motion. The transplanting tool is therefore especially suitable for extracting seedlings from rough terrains.
