45 Plural rotary member position encoder having electromagnetically coupled resonant frequency multiplexed outputs for respectively associated rotatable members US545681 1995-12-14 US5796250A 1998-08-18 Andrew Nicholas Dames
An apparatus for indicating the angular position of a rotatable member includes a drive coil with its axis corresponding to the axis of rotation of the rotatable member. A coil is wound around the rotatable member, and a capacitor is provided in the coil to form an LC resonant circuit. The coil on the rotatable member is wound so that application of an alternating magnetic field to the drive coil induces a resonance in the LC circuit which is constant for all angular positions of the rotatable member. Pick-up coils are provided such that the planes of these coils and the drive coil are orthogonal. The resonance of the LC circuit produces signals in the output coils which depend upon the angular position of the rotatable member. The signals may be processed to determine that angular position, and the processing is simplified with this arrangement of output coils since the signals produced therein are quadrature signals.

A wheel is mounted on a rotating shaft and cooperates with at least one pair of inductors fixedly mounted in juxtaposition to the wheel. The wheel has at least one opening formed therein for generating a signal whenever the opening in the wheel is substantially aligned circumferentially with the pair of inductors. An electronic control circuit, responsive to the signal, actuates a remote meter for providing a remote indication of the shaft position. In a preferred embodiment, this improved sensing means is applied to the remote reading of a conventional household electric meter. Two pair of inductors are provided for cooperation with five equiangularly-spaced closed slots formed in the wheel, thereby providing ten signals (or counts) for each complete revolution of the wheel. The wheel is mounted on the shaft of the unit decade dial in the meter. The remote meter comprises a digital counter, responsive to the pulse generated by the electronic control circuit, for providing a remote digital read-out of the accumulated kilowatt hours on the meter.

A transducer for indicating the extent of rotation of a shaft in digital units consists of several intergeared rotating circuit closure devices coupled to the shaft, each representing a decade in the numerical system. The closure devices operate, by magnetic attraction, reed switches connected to relay circuits. Each closing and subsequent opening of a circuit connected to the closure devices prepares the eventual actuation of a particular relay designating a digit in each decade. A holding circuit for each relay maintains closure of the relays energized at the time when the rotation of the closure device is momentarily stopped for interrogation of the transducer.

A coil (65) is wound around the rotatable member, and a capacitor (66) is provided in the coil (65) to form an LC resonant circuit. The coil (65) on the rotatable member is wound so that application of an alternating magnetic field to the drive coil (51) induces a resonance in the LC circuit which is constant for all angular positions of the rotatable member. Pick-up coils (53, 55) are provided such that the planes of these coils and the drive coil (51) are orthogonal. The resonance of the LC circuit produces signals in the output coils (53, 55) which depend upon the angular position of the rotatable member. The signals may be processed to determine that angular position, and the processing is simplified with this arrangement of output coils since the signals produced therein are quadrature signals.
