A liner rotates a bit to make more hole. The liner has openings with inserts in them to lend torque resistance to the liner. The inserts have a passage with a send control media in the passage and a seal so that the liner can hold pressure for run in to get proper circulation through the bit. When sufficient hole is made, the liner is hung off an existing cemented tubular and the seal for the passages with the sand control media is removed by a variety of techniques so that the formation can be produced in a single trip.
184 | METHODS AND DEVICES FOR TREATING MULTIPLE-INTERVAL WELL BORES | EP08736889.0 | 2008-04-02 | EP2145076A1 | 2010-01-20 | EAST, Loyd, E., Jr. |
Methods and devices are provided for treating multiple interval well bores. More particularly, an isolation assembly may be used to allow for zonal isolation to allow treatment of selected productive or previously producing intervals in multiple interval well bores. One example of a method for treating a multiple interval well bore includes the steps of: introducing an isolation assembly to a well bore, the isolation assembly comprising a liner, one or more sleeves and a plurality of swellable packers, wherein the sleeves and swellable packers are disposed about the liner; deploying a shifting tool inside the liner, where the sleeves are configured so as to provide open, closed and open to screen positions when actuated by the shifting tool. An open position allows for treatment of the well bore while an open to screen position allows for receiving fluid from the well bore. A closed position re¬ establishes zonal isolation.

A downhole apparatus is described comprising a main body coupled with a well tubing and a swellable mantle disposed on the main body. The swellable mantle expands upon contact with at least one predetermined fluid, and the main body comprises at least one opening for fluid flow between an exterior of the main body and the bore. An insert permits the passage of fluid, through the swellable mantle, between the exterior of the apparatus and the opening. In one aspect of the invention a screen filters solids between the exterior of the apparatus and the bore, and a swellable mantle comprises a first region which allows the passage of fluid between the exterior of the apparatus and the main body and a second region, circumferentially adjacent the first region, which substantially prevents passage of fluid. Corresponding well completion and production methods are also described.

191 | ANNULAR PRESSURE RELIEF COLLAR | EP05701819.4 | 2005-01-07 | EP1718841B1 | 2008-02-27 | McVAY Chester S; SWEATMAN Ronald E |
The present invention is an apparatus for relieving annular fluid pressure between nested casing strings. The invention includes a pressure relief collar (10) formed of a cylindrical housing (110) and a set of end connections (112) disposed on opposite sides of the cylindrical housing. The end connections join adjacent sections of casing string of the same diameter. A plurality of equally spaced centralizer blades (116) are secured to the outer surface of the cylindrical housing. Each centralizer blade is equipped with a pressure relief mechanism, which opens the passage of fluid from an outer annulus between adjacent casing strings to an inner annulus between different adjacent casing strings and also prevents backflow of fluid. One or more inlet and outlet filters may also be employed to remove solids and other contaminants from the fluid entering the pressure relief mechanism. The invention also has application as a pressure relief collar for eccentric casing strings.
192 | SCREEN FOR CONTROLLING INFLOW OF SOLID PARTICLES IN A WELLBORE | EP05764062.5 | 2005-06-23 | EP1792049A1 | 2007-06-06 | BAAIJENS, Matheus, Norbertus; CORNELISSEN, Erik Kerst |
A wellbore screen is provided for controlling inflow of solid particles into a wellbore. The wellbore screen comprises a conduit for transport of fluid, the conduit being provided with a filter for reducing inflow of solid particles into the conduit and swelling means arranged between the filter and the wellbore wall. The swelling means defines a plurality of compartments between the filter and the wellbore wall and is susceptible of swelling against the wellbore wall upon contact with a selected fluid so as to substantially prevent flow of fluid along the outside of the swelling means from one of said compartments into another of said compartments.
193 | METHOD FOR PREPARING WELLBORE CASING FOR INSTALLATION | EP02732292.4 | 2002-06-13 | EP1399644B1 | 2007-04-04 | SLACK, Maurice, William |
A method has been invented for enhancing the installability of wellbore casing such as for use to line a borehole through a formation or to act as a drill string and to remain in hole, after drilling, to line the borehole created by its use. A device supporting the installation of wellbore casing into a wellbore is crimped onto the outer surface of the casing. An interference fit is created by plastic deformation inwardly in radial direction. The device supporting casing installation can be to facilitate (1) run in through the borehole (2), to maintain positioning relative to the borehole (3) or to accommodate wear against the wall of the borehole into which the casing is run. The devices supporting the installation of wellbore casing are attached to the casing to create a connection having structurally significant axial and torque load transfer capacity.

A wellbore screen (1) is provided for controlling inflow of solid particles into a wellbore (2). The wellbore screen comprises a conduit (3) for transporting fluid, an outer layer (4) comprising a filter for reducing inflow of solid particles into the conduit (3), the outer layer extending around the conduit and being radially expandable against the wellbore wall, and swelling means arranged between the conduit and the outer layer. The swelling means (6) is susceptible of swelling upon contact with a selected fluid so as to radially expand the outer layer against the wellbore wall.
195 | PIPE CENTRALIZER AND METHOD OF ATTACHMENT | EP02729745.6 | 2002-06-13 | EP1399641B1 | 2007-02-21 | SLACK, Maurice, William |
A crimpable centralizer has been invented for installation on pipe, such as would be useful in well bore drilling and casing operations. The present invention provides a centralizer having a cylindrical body which when coaxially placed over a pipe and substantially radially inwardly displaced at a plurality of points (i.e. crimped) about the circumference of a section of the cylindrical body, attaches to the pipe to create a connection having structurally significant axial and torque load transfer capacity. When crimped according to the methods of the present invention, the load transfer capacity of the connection between the centralizer and the pipe can be arranged to substantially prevent significant relative movement of the centralizer on the pipe under loads that may be encountered when using one or more of the pipes as components of a tubular string used for drilling or completing well bores.

Running an isolation device into the well and using the isolation device to form a seal to create a first region of the well isolating the surface of the well from a second higher pressure region of the well, further including running an assembly into the first region and engaging the isolation device with the assembly to remove the seal. After removal of the seal, the isolation device and assembly are run together further into the well. With this technique longer assemblies can be inserted into the well than is possible with possible with the use of a conventional lubricator.
