A stuffing box and associated control system having the facilities for sensing a leak past the polished rod seals and for correcting the leak by adjustment of the seals, utilizes a pressurized piston system for tightening the seals around the polished rod and also features means for signalling the well operator about the leak, for shutting down the pumping apparatus, and for achieving a final pack-off of the wellhead. |

An extensible polished rod protector having alternating inner and outer diameter portions defining adjacent convolutions, and annular retainer members in the form of radial, reinforcing support plates within the outer diameter portions for preventing radially inward collapsing thereof upon extension of the protector and also preventing contact between the inner diameter portions and the polished rod. The polished rod passes through a liquid receiving container having means for trapping oil accummulated therein while permitting the egress of water therefrom. A floating rod wiper assembly in the container maintains wiping engagement with the reciprocating rod while accommodating lateral shifting and wobbling thereof. |

A cylindrical tube with a screw threaded packing gland in the upper end carries an upper guide rubber with a plurality of packing rubbers stacked thereabove and engaged by the gland which applies the necessary pressure to seal the polish rod reciprocating within the stuffing box. A blow-out preventor assembly is situated below the upper guide rubber and comprises a cylindrical rubber portion surrounding the polish rod and having O rings sealed adjacent the upper and lower ends of the cylindrical rubber. An annular chamber is formed on the outer surface of the cylindrical rubber between the O rings and communicates with a source of fluid under pressure which can firstly apply pressure to the rubber surrounding the polish rod and shut off the well so that the stuffing box can be serviced and secondly, can act as an automatic blow-out preventor if the polish rod breaks. Further protection is provided by a spring loaded hinged flap valve which is provided at the base of the stuffing box and which snaps shut if the polish rod breaks and disengages from the stuffing box. |

A dual wiper for oil well pipe and rod, and the like, made by stacking single wipers one above the other mutually separated by spacers, the improvement residing in the use of headed studs easily applied by a hammer blow while assembling the wipers in place around the well pipe with the studs also supporting the spacers in their desired locations, the single wipers being provided with annular series of holes shaped and aligned to receive the studs, and the diameters of the holes being such as to grip the studs tightly around their shanks after the heads of the studs have been driven therethrough.

A drilling apparatus for pressure drilling through the earth, comprising a drill string, a casing tube assembly, a rotary drilling machine with mechanized drill string handling and a liquid handling system. The liquid handling system comprises means for controlling the casing tube pressure and the liquid level within the drill string during withdrawal and disconnection of the drill string. At disconnecting a drill string section, a pressure air impulse is introduced into the flushing channel thereof so as to lower the liquid level and thereby avoid liquid over-flow at the top of the casing tube. A back-flow restricting valve prevents rapid rising of the liquid level within the drill string. A preventer unit having a pressure balanced packing sleeve seals off the upper end of the casing tube; the contact pressure of said packing sleeve is automatically and continuously adapted to the actual casing tube pressure by means of a pressure responsive control valve which is arranged to release the packing sleeve from pressure in response to decreasing casing tube pressure.

In a combination of an oil well pumping unit with sucker rods and the like, a self aligning stuffing box and well head seal to accommodate misalignment of the rods and tubing. The self aligning stuffing box structure includes a body member on a well tubing and a rod guide member mounted on the body member for limited universal movement. A guide extension is on the rod guide member and has a bore and an enlarged chamber. A rod extends through the guide extension bore and chamber, guide member, and body member into the oil well. Packing or seals in the guide extension sealingly engages the rod above and below the chamber to provide operative seals. Pressure sensitive members communicate with the guide member below the packing or seals therein to indicate fluid pressure in the chamber. Liquid pressure responsive structure communicates with the chamber and provides a signal in the event liquid accumulates in the chamber above a predetermined pressure; as by flowing through the packing or seals below the chamber.

A spray shield assembly for oil wells which require artificial lift apparatus The shield assembly includes a hollow bonnet member and a seal assembly wherein the seal assembly is supported in overlying relationship relative to a stuffing box on an oil well. The bonnet member is affixed to oil well structure by resilient biasing means. A polished rod is sealingly and reciprocatingly received axially of the bonnet member and the seal assembly. The spray shield is made in component parts which are joined together in a manner which enables its assembly to the well head without the necessity of dismantling any portion of the pumpjack.

The apparatus is used in conjunction with a rig to strip mud or oil from a tubular string as it is pulled from a well. The apparatus comprises a pair of opposed, overlapping rubber pads mounted in a container. One or more air cylinders or like means link the pads. The cylinders can be actuated from the rig floor to draw the pads together around the string as it sways laterally during tripping. The pressure with which the pads press against the string can be adjusted; this permits the unit to operate as a stripper when the string is being pulled from the well, and as a well bore cover when the string is being run back into the well.
