The present invention relates to an improvement in the feeding of a wet web of paper from the fourdrinier wire of a paper making machine, at the couch roll thereof, to the felt of the adjacent first press section. A corner roll of the press section, with the felt entrained therearound is adjacent the couch roll, and a draw roll is positioned above the corner roll and slightly downstream thereof relative to the couch roll. The draw roll is in contact with the wet web on the felt and is driven thereby. This configuration results in fewer breaks and a cleaner web, thereby increasing productivity and reducing downtime. |

A suction head or a pick-up roll in a paper machine is mounted on a pivotable lever and is movable therewith between an operative position, an intermediate position at a short distance from the operative position, and a retracted position at a substantial distance from the operative position by two hydraulic cylinder and piston units whose cylinders are articulately connected to the frame and whose piston rods are articulately connected to the lever. The piston rods are rigid with first pistons, and each unit further comprises an annular second piston which surrounds the respective piston rod. Admission of pressurized fluid into a first chamber of each cylinder results in movement of the second pistons from first to second positions to thereby move the lever from operative to intermediate position through the medium of the first pistons and piston rods. The lever is pivoted to retracted position by admitting fluid into a second chamber of each cylinder to thus move the first pistons relative to the second pistons. The lever can be returned to operative position by admitting fluid into a third chamber of each cylinder and by relieving the pressure of fluid in the first chamber so that the first pistons first move relative to and thereupon together with the second pistons. |

A paper-machine press section having structure for transferring a web away from the press section toward the drying section of the machine. The press section includes a press roll with which a transfer structure cooperates for transferring a web from this press roll away from the latter and toward the drying section. This transfer structure includes at least a transfer suction roll having an outer shell formed with perforations through which suction is transmitted to a web. A suction chamber communicates with these perforations while between the suction chamber and the outer shell which has the perforations there is a sealing structure which is capable of providing between the perforated shell and the suction chamber a seal which does not require the use of seal water. |

A paper making apparatus and process of the type wherein the paper is processed from a starting condition of a slurry of pulp fiber to a later condition of a continuous self-sustaining paper sheet. The paper is carried continuously along a preselected path of travel extending from the starting condition to the later condition and for processing the paper as it is being carried. The path of travel normally includes a plurality of pairs of contacting members, including a forming wire and a pick-up felt, a pick-up felt and a bottom felt, and a pick-up felt and Yankee dryer, such contacting members processing the paper. The paper is passed through each nip defined by each of the contacting members and continues along its desired path of travel. Air pressure is applied on the discharge side or outgoing side of one or more of the nips defined between the sets of contacting members. The air pressure is applied in a direction which causes the paper to remain in the desired path of travel and to avoid deviation thereof from the desired path of travel. |

An apparatus for forming airlaid wood fiber webs at high speeds, which webs may be used for sanitary wipe and toweling applications, comprises a means for air laying a wood fiber continuum on to a foraminous carrier, a water spray for wetting the continuum, a transfer roll positioned to accept the wetted continuum surface to strip it from the carrier and a patterned roll with land areas and relieved areas on the roll surface and held in pressure engagement with the transfer roll to compress the continuum to form a closely spaced pattern of deep indentations or bonded zones with fluffy mounds of fibers therebetween.
