CONSTITUTION: Waste water containing organic matters is treated by using microorganism in an active sludge process, a water spray filter bed process, etc. As the treatment proceeds, the pH falls. At least one selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide is contacted as pH controlling agent with the waste water. As compared with a neutralization process by using sodium hydroxide, the decomposition rate of the organic matters is increased, the amount of sludge formed is decreased, sludge which adheres to piping and walls of instruments can easily be removed, and surplus sludge settles satisfactorily.
