CONSTITUTION: A ring-type optical resonator is formed of an optical system composed of a collimator lens 36, a half mirror 34, and a micro-mirror 34, and a small optical isolator 32 is inserted in a halfway point of the ring-like optical system where an optical feedback is performed. In addition to this constitution, an optical filter 33 is provided at a point on an optical feedback route to provide the ring type resonator with wavelength selectivity so as to stabilize a laser in oscillation. An optical power is outputted through a half mirror 34 located on the outlet side of an optical amplifier. By this setup, light is made to circulate in an resonator only in one direction, repeatedly amplified through a semiconductor amplifier 31 circulating in one direction, and starts oscillating. In such a traveling wave type semiconductor laser, only light traveling in one direction is present in a resonator, so that a standing wave is prevented from occurring in the semiconductor medium of an optical amplifier.
