CONSTITUTION: The compound II is prepared by reacting a compound I (R is H or alkyl) with cyclopropiophenone in the presence of an alkali metal sulfite, a hydrogen halide, and an alkali metal carbonate, pref. in water or in an organic solvent (e.g. alcohol, ether, aromatic hydrocarbon, etc.) at a temperature between room temperature and the boiling point of the reaction mixture, for several to 24 hr.
EFFECT: The objective compound can be obtained in high purity and yield, with a simple and economical process.
USE: An antitussive (the compound II wherein R is ethyl, is known as "Eprazinone"), etc.
