CONSTITUTION: A position measurement error level determining means compares the level of a position measurement error detected by a position measurement error level detecting means with a prescribed determination reference value and determines the level. A determination reference value setting means sets and holds two determina tion reference values, a first determination reference value for determining the position measurement error level and a second determination reference value having higher determination level than the first value. When a map matching means is used, a satel lite data use control means recognizes the current position, using own vehicle position data recognized by a satellite navigation system, when the position measurement error level equals or exceeds the first determination reference value set by the determi nation reference value setting means. When the map matching means is not used, it recognizes the current position, using the own vehicle position data recognized by the satellite navigation system only when the position measurement error level equals or exceeds the second determination reference value.
