A fast switching thyristor having a shorted emitter structure in which, in order to shorten the turn-off time, the charge carrier lifetime is set to be low by means of recombination centers. The charge carrier lifetime in at least the control base zone of the thyristor is set initially to be homogeneous and low corresponding to a desired firing resistance underneath the emitter zone with respect to the voltage rise of the returning forward voltage in the thyristor after every recovery process, and the charge carrier lifetime is set to be low compared to the homogeneous setting in the partial region of the control base zone extending from below the control electrode substantially to the portion of the edge of the emitter zone which faces the control electrode but without contacting the edge of the emitter zone. If the thyristor is of the amplifying gate type having a shorted auxiliary emitter structure, then the charge carrier lifetime in the region between the main and auxiliary emitter zones is less than the charge carrier lifetime in the region between the auxiliary emitter zone and control electrode which in turn is less than the homogeneously set charge carrier lifetime in the bulk or volume of the device. Additionally, the density of the shorting channels in the edge region of the auxiliary emitter zone facing the control electrode is greater than in the remainder of this zone and than in the main emitter zone.

The component identifies a plurality of storage nodes that each stores a complete copy of the data unit. The component sends, to the plurality of storage nodes, an instruction to retrieve a copy of the data unit within a specified period of time. At each storage node receiving an instruction, a determination of whether the copy of the data unit may be retrieved within the specified period of time is made, and if so, the copy of the data unit is provided to the component only if the copy of the data unit was actually retrieved within the specified period. The component provides the first copy of the data unit it receives to the requestor and discards any subsequently received copies of the data unit.

The transmitter, assumed to have statistical channel state information (CSI) in the form of the channel Doppler spectrum, embeds known pilots symbols into the transmission stream. At the receiver, instantaneous, though imperfect, CSI is acquired through minimum mean square estimation of the channel based on some subset of pilot observations. The cutoff rate is computed and the optimal resource allocation is developed using, for example, a Gauss-Markov correlation model of a communication channel or a Jakes model.

The method starts with receiving a request for a task at a network device, the request including a first parameter indicating VMs required, a second parameter indicating bandwidths the required VMs need, a third parameter indicating a duration of the task, and a fourth parameter indicating a deadline of the task. The network device then selects a starting time and a bandwidth allocation of the task, where the bandwidth allocation is shrank to be smaller than the second parameter indicating, and where the selection aims at minimizing a measurement of cloud resource utilization considering consumptions of both VMs and bandwidth. Then the network device allocates VMs for the request at the starting time with the bandwidth allocated at a particular location in the cloud computing environment.

A fuel injection pump for a diesel engine includes a means for calculating a proper fuel injection amount per each engine stroke and a means for injecting an amount of fuel per each engine stroke approximately equal to this proper fuel injection amount determined by this injection amount calculating means. The pump also includes a means for calculating a reference combustion time which represents approximately how long combustion in an engine stroke should last, and a means for detecting the approximate start and end of combustion in that engine stroke. From this information, these, an appropriate means calculates the approximate actual time of combustion in that engine stroke, and then another means compares the thus calculated approximate actual combustion time and the thus calculated reference combustion time, and based upon the result of said comparison selectively actuates a means for cutting off fuel injection, so as to stop the diesel engine from running and so as thereby to prevent overrunning due to abnormal combustion, if it decides as a result of the comparison that the actual combustion time is too long as compared with the reference combustion time. Optionally, this comparison may consider whether or not the calculated approximate actual combustion time has been greater than the calculated reference combustion time for a specified number of consecutive combustion cycles, and may interrupt engine running if such has been the case.

A fuel injection pump for a diesel engine includes an input shaft rotated with the crankshaft, and a housing and a plunger which slides in a bore formed in the housing and is coaxial with the input shaft, with a high pressure chamber being defined at an end of the plunger between it and the bore. The plunger rotates with the input shaft and reciprocates so as to pump fuel at high pressure from the high pressure chamber to the engine cylinders, under the control of an electrically actuated electromagnetic valve, comprising a solenoid coil, which selectively vents the high pressure chamber according to the control of a control means, so as to provide fuel injection in appropriate amount to the diesel engine. There is provided a means for determining whether or not the voltage across the solenoid coil of the electromagnetic valve, when supply of power thereto changes from the ON to the OFF condition, rises higher than a certain value, or not. If a determining means detects that this voltage across the solenoid coil has not so risen, this lack of high transient voltage spike indicating that the solenoid coil may be discontinuous or functioning abnormally, then the engine is restrained. This restraint may consist of interrupting fuel flow to the engine to totally stop it, or of restricting air intake to the engine so as to put a ceiling on its rotational speed.
