CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION

This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 62/084,718 filed on Nov. 26, 2014. The above identified patent application is herein incorporated by reference in its entirety to provide continuity of disclosure.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to mattress toppers. More specifically, the present invention provides a mattress topper that helps to prevent a user from rolling off of the side of his or her bed. The mattress topper comprises a rectangular body having sloped regions along the side edges thereof so as to prevent the user from rolling off of the side of the bed when positioned atop a mattress.

Many people frequently change positions and move around while sleeping. As a result, a person may accidentally fall off of the side of the bed when changing positions. This may cause the person to suffer a serious injury and it may be difficult to prevent such occurrences. Further, the sides of a mattress may begin to bend or slope downwardly after years or use. The downward sloping sides of the mattress may increase the chances of the person rolling off of the side of the bed on which the mattress rests. Thus, a mattress topper that helps to prevent a user from rolling off of the side of a bed is desired.

Devices have been disclosed in the prior art that relate to mattress pads. These include devices that have been patented and published in patent application publications. These devices generally relate to mattresses and mattress pads having border regions for preventing the user from falling off of the side thereof, such as U.S. Pat. No. 5,960,493, U.S. Pat. These prior art devices have several known drawbacks. The devices in the prior art provide means for preventing the user from falling off of the side of a bed, but fail to disclose a mattress topper having sloped regions along the side edges thereof for preventing the user from rolling off of the side of the bed. Further, the devices in the prior art do not disclose mattress toppers with removable sloped regions so that the mattress topper can be used as a conventional mattress topper if so desired.

In light of the devices disclosed in the prior art, it is submitted that the present invention substantially diverges in design elements from the prior art and consequently it is clear that there is a need in the art for an improvement to existing mattress topper devices. In this regard the instant invention substantially fulfills these needs.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Reference is made herein to the attached drawings. Like reference numerals are used throughout the drawings to depict like or similar elements of the mattress topper. For the purposes of presenting a brief and clear description of the present invention, the preferred embodiment will be discussed as used for preventing a user from rolling off of the sides of a bed. The figures are intended for representative purposes only and should not be considered to be limiting in any respect.

Referring now to FIGS. 1 and 2, there is shown a perspective view and a side view of the mattress topper, respectively. The mattress topper 11 comprises a substantially rectangular body 12. The mattress topper 11 includes a flat or planar lower surface so that the mattress topper 11 is adapted to be placed directly on a mattress or similar support. The mattress topper 11 comprises a first end 13, a second end 14, and a pair of opposing sides 15, 16. A pair of sloped regions 18 are positioned on the opposing sides 15, 16 of the body 12.

The mattress topper 11 is preferably composed of a pliable and durable material. The mattress topper 11 may be composed of a foam material that maintains its shape but can be deformed to fit the shape of the user's body when lying thereon. In some embodiments, the sloped regions are composed of a different material than the body of the mattress topper. In such embodiments, the sloped regions 18 are composed of a semi-rigid material that is not easily deformed and that is adapted to maintain its shape and form when a user rests his or her weight thereon. In this way, the sloped regions 18 will not deform or bend when the user rolls against the same. This helps to ensure that the user does not roll off of the side of the bed.

The mattress topper 11 comprises sloped regions 18 along the sides 15, 16 thereof. The sloped regions 18 extend from the first end 13 of the body 12 to the second end 14 thereof. In this way, the sloped regions 18 extend along the entire length of the mattress topper. The sloped regions 18 are sloped upwardly relative to the plane of the upper surface 17 of the body 12. The sloped regions 18 are disposed at an angle of forty-five degrees in a preferred embodiment.

Referring now to FIG. 3, there is shown, a perspective view of an alternate embodiment of the mattress topper having removable sloped regions. In some embodiments, the sloped regions 18 are removably affixed to the upper surface 17 of the body 12. The lower surface of the sloped regions 18 includes a fastener thereon, such as hook and loop fastening material that is removably engaged with a mating fastener disposed along the sides 15, 16 of the upper surface 17 of the body 12 of the mattress topper 11. In this way, the sloped regions 18 can be removed from the mattress topper 11 so that the mattress topper's upper surface is entirely planar and can be used as a conventional mattress. Alternatively, the user can affix only one sloped region 18 to the body 12 of the mattress topper 11 if so desired. This may be useful where a bed is positioned with one side of the bed against a wall, wherein the sloped region 18 is not needed on the side of the bed adjacent to the wall.

Referring now to FIGS. 4 and 5, there are shown views of the leg rest of the mattress topper. In some embodiments, the mattress topper 11 further comprises a leg rest 20 that is adapted to be removably positioned on the mattress topper 11 to provide support for the user's legs. The leg rest 20 allows users to rest their legs in an elevated position. The leg rest 20 comprises an elongated body 22 having a first end 23 and a second end 24. The body 22 preferably comprises a triangular cross sectional area that forms a point 21 at an upper end thereof. The body 22 slopes downward on opposing sides of the point 21 in order to provide a gradual increase in elevation.

The body 22 is adapted to be positioned on the mattress topper 11 perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bed. The first end 23 and second end 24 of the body 22 are angled so that the ends 23, 24 rest flush against the raised edges of the body 12 of the mattress topper 11. In this way, the leg rest 20 forms a continuous surface when placed on the mattress topper 11. The leg rest 20 can be positioned in any of various positions on the mattress topper 11 as desired by the user.
