1. Appartus comprising a cutter structure having cutting edges arranged in a predetermined pattern which is to be essentially reproduced on a work piece, and means for producing relative vibratory movement between said cutter structure and said work piece, while the cutter structure is positioned for contact with the work piece, and in a relation pregressively cutting said pattern on the work piece, said means including a hammer positioned to apply a series of successive hammer blows to said cutter structure and thereby cause vibration thereof, and a wheel having a series of actuating elements operable upon rotation to actuate said hammer to apply said hammer blows to the cutter structure.
2. Apparatus as recited in claim 1, in which said means include means connecting said hammer to said cutter structure resiliently for yieldingly resisted hammering movement relative thereto to apply said blows to the cutter structure.

Apparatus as recited in claim 1, in which said means include means connecting said hammer to said cutter structure resiliently for yieldingly resisted hammering movement relative thereto to apply said blows to the cutter structure, said hammer including a hammer body, and a roller mounted rotatably to said body and engaging said actuating elements of said wheel for actuation thereby.
4. Apparatus comprising a cutter structure having cutting edges arranged in a predetermined pattern which is to be essentially reproduced on a work piece; means for producing relative vibratory movement between said cutter structure and said work piece, while the cutter structure is positioned for contact with the work piece, and in a relation progressively cutting said pattern on the work piece; said means including a hinge structure mounting said cutter structure for vibratory swinging movement about an axis and toward and away from the work piece, and a power driven wheel operable upon rotation to vibrate said cutter structure; a pair of power driven eccentric drives connected to said hinge structure at spaced locations in a relation to bodily oscillate the hinge structure and carried cutter structure during said vibratory movement; and means for driving said wheel and said eccentric drives simultaneously.

Apparatus comprising a cutter structure having cutting edges arranged in a predetermined pattern which is to be essentially reproduced on a work piece; means for producing relative vibratory movement between said cutter structure and said work piece, while the cutter structure is positioned for contact with the work piece, and in a relation progressively cutting said pattern on the work piece; said means including a hammer positioned to apply a series of successive hammer blows to said cutter structure and thereby cause vibration of the cutter structure, a wheel having a series of actuating elements operable upon rotation to actuate said hammer to apply said hammer blows to the cutter structure, a spring arm mounting said hammer to said cutter structure resiliently for yieldingly resisted hammering movement relative thereto, a roller mounted rotatably to said hammer and engaging said actuating elements of said wheel for actuation thereby, a carrier structure by which said wheel is carried rotatably and mounted for swinging movement to advance the wheel during a cutting operation, powered means for simultaneously rotating said wheel and advancing said carrier structure and wheel, and a hinge structure mounting said cutter structure for vibratory swinging movement about an axis and toward and away from the work piece; a pair of eccentric drives connected to said hinge structure at spaced locations in a relation to bodily oscillate the hinge structure and carried cutter structure; and means for driving said eccentric drives in unison with one another and during simultaneous rotation and advancement of said wheel.

Apparatus comprising a cutter structure having cutting edges arranged in a predetermined patterN which is to be essentially reproduced on a work piece; means for producing relative vibratory movement between said cutter structure and said work piece, while the cutter structure is positioned for contact with the work piece, and in a relation pregressively cutting said pattern on the work piece; a swinging arm; a clutch for driving said arm through a predetermined arc; a linkage for advancing said cutter structure toward the work piece in response to swinging movement of said arm; an actuating part for actuating the clutch to active condition; a latch for holding said actuating part in clutch engaging position; and an element actuable by said arm at the end of its travel to release said latch.

Apparatus as recited in claim 6, in which said linkage includes a bell crank, a link between said arm and said bell crank, a swinging carrier structure, and a link between said crank and said carrier structure, said vibrating means including a toothed wheel for vibrating said cutter structure and mounted rotatably to said carrier structure.
8. Apparatus as recited in claim 6, in which said linkage includes a swinging part actuated by said arm, and a gear and rack drive from said swinging part to said cutter structure.
9. Apparatus comprising a support, a work holder mounted to said support and adapted to hold a work piece, a cutter structure mounted to said support and having cutting edges facing toward said work piece and arranged ina predetermined pattern which is to be essentially reproduced on the work piece, vibrating means for producing relative vibratory movement between said cutter structure and said work holder and carried work piece in a direction toward and away from one another and in a relation to cut said predetermined pattern on the work piece, and additional actuating means for moving said cutter structure and said work holder and carried work piece relative to one another generally transversely of the direction of vibration during said vibratory movement, and in addition thereto, to enhance the cutting action.
10. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, in which said vibrating means include a wheel having a plurality of circularly spaced actuating elements acting upon rotation to vibrate the cutter structure.
11. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, in wich said additional actuating means are operable to shift the cutter structure and work holder and carried work piece relative to one another in an orbital path during said vibratory movement and in addition thereto.
12. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, in which said additional actuating means are operable to move the cutter structure laterally relative to both the work holder and support.
13. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, in which said vibrating means are constructed to vibrate the cutter structure relative to said support.
14. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, in which said vibrating means are constructed to vibrate the cutter structure relative to the support and towards and away from the work piece and said additional actuating means move the cutter structure relative to the support.
15. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, in which said vibrating means are constructed to vibrate the cutter structure relative to said support, and said additional actuating means oscillate the cutter structure orbitally relative to said support as it vibrates and generally transversely of the direction of vibration.
16. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, including advancing means for moving said cutter structure and work holder and carried work piece relatively toward one another during said vibratory and transverse movements and in addition thereto.
17. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, in which said vibrating means include a wheel acting upon rotation to vibrate the cutter structure, there being advancing means for moving said wheel progressively toward said work piece as it rotates.
18. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, in which said work holder includes means for mounting a gun stock as said work piece aT a location to have said pattern formed thereon by said cutter structure.
19. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, including two of said cutter structures mounted to said support and each having cutting edges defining a pattern to be reproduced and mounted to engage and vibrate and move laterally relative to and form patterns on opposite sides of a work piece.
20. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, in which said vibrating means include a wheel acting upon rotation to vibrate the cutter structure, and a carrier structure by which said wheel is carried rotatably and mounted for swinging movement to advance the wheel during a cutting operation.
21. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, in which said vibrating means include a hinge structure mounting said cutter structure for vibratory swinging movement about an axis and toward and away from the work piece.
22. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, in which said vibrating means include a hinge structure mounting said cutter structure for vibratory swinging movement about an axis and toward and away from the work piece, said additional actuating means including a pair of power driven eccentric drives connected to said hinge structure at spaced locations in a relation to bodily oscillate the hinge structure and carried cutter structure during said vibratory movement.
23. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, including means for progressively advancing said cutter structure toward the work piece during said vibration, and means for automatically halting said advancement at a predetermined position of the cutter structure.
24. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, including means for progressively advancing said cutter structure toward the work piece during said vibration, a clutch for driving said advancing means, and means responsive to arrival of said cutter structure at a predetermined position to automatically release said clutch and halt the advancement.
25. Apparatus as recited in claim 9, including a swinging arm, a clutch for driving said arm through a predetermined arc, a linkage for advancing said cutter structure toward the work piece in response to swinging movement of said arm, and means for releasing said clutch automatically in response to arrival of said arm at a predetermined position.
