High-pressure bi-directional valve
A control element of a bi-directional valve is in fluid communication with an outlet pressure and an inlet pressure when the valve is closed such that a sum of the forces applied to the control element result in a net force urging the control element to seat against a valve seat. The valve includes a valve body carrying the valve seat. The control element is balanced on an outlet side of the valve seat such that the outlet pressure applies approximately no net force to the control element. In contrast, the control element is unbalanced on an inlet side of the valve seat such that inlet pressure applies a net force on the control element to bias the control to seat against the valve seat. |

Double ducted hovering air-vehicle
A dual ducted fan arrangement in which the duct components, engine, and avionics/payload pods are capable of being quickly disassembled to fit within common backpacking systems. Each duct is identical in fan, stator, and control vane design. Assembly connections between ducted fans and electronic modules are also identical. An engine or APU drives the dual ducted fans through a splined shaft to a differential or through electric motors. Energy is transferred to the ducted fans by a single gear mounted to the stator hub. Relative speeds of the individual ducted fans are controlled through separate frictional or generator load control braking mechanisms on each of the splined shafts between the differential and ducted fans. In the electric motor case relative speed is through electronic speed control. The fans are counter rotating for torque balancing. The electronic module locations are vertically variable for longitudinal center of gravity for variations in payloads. |

Drive train for a motor vehicle and method for operating such a drive train
In a method for operating a drive train for a motor vehicle, a torque is produced by means of an internal combustion engine as a function of an available torque set value signal and transmitted to drive wheels by means of a clutch. With the help of an electric motor, a closing force is applied, with which the clutch is held in a closed position against a restoring force. The electric motor is energized in such a way that a high current is used in the case of a high torque and a lower current is used in the case of a lower torque. The thermal load of the electric motor is determined and a load signal corresponding to the thermal load is produced. The load signal is compared with a load limit signal assigned to a permissible load range. If the load signal deviates from the load-limit signal, the torque of the internal combustion engine is limited. |

Apparatus and method for reducing torque steering
An apparatus is provided for suppressing torque steering in a vehicle in which left/right drive shafts are coupled via outer joints to left/right front wheels. The drive shafts are connected via inner joints to an engine and transmission. The height of the inner joints is set 5-20 mm lower than the height of the outer joints, thus forming tilt angles between the left/right drive shafts and the center axis through the left/right wheels and the outer joint. As acceleration of the vehicle increases, the engine moves upward, thus causing the inner joints to move as well. This upward movement of the inner joints causes the tilt angle formed by the drive shafts to decrease. The specific placement of the inner joints is selected so that the left/right tilt angles reach zero at a predetermined rate of acceleration, which may be the vehicle's maximum rate of acceleration. |

Hybrid vehicle and driving resistance measurement method of hybrid vehicle
In response to a coasting drive instruction for measurement of a driving resistance of a hybrid vehicle, the coasting control procedure of the invention prohibits a change of a gear position in a transmission and stops both an engine and a motor MG1. The coasting control procedure calculates a canceling torque, which cancels out a torque applied to a ring gear shaft or a drive shaft via a power distribution integration mechanism by generation of an inertia torque accompanied with a rotation speed change of the motor MG1. The calculated canceling torque is set to a torque command Tm2* of a motor MG2, and the motor MG2 is driven and controlled with the torque command Tm2*. This arrangement makes the ring gear shaft or the drive shaft completely free and enables accurate measurement of the driving resistance of the hybrid vehicle during such a coasting drive of the hybrid vehicle in a fully non-driving state. |

Air chambers 25 and 26 above and below the piston 24 are filled with gases. If a flexing degree at the knee joint 8 is a predetermined value or less, then the air chambers 25 and 26 are brought into communication through a groove 28 in the cylinder 23, and the spring means 21 does not generate an elastic force, but if the flexing degree exceeds the predetermined value, then the air chambers 25 and 26 are hermetically sealed from each other and the spring means 21 produces an elastic force, the elastic force acting on the knee joint 8 as assisting driving force. A burden on a joint actuator of a leg can be reduced, while reducing energy consumption of the robot by using a small and simple construction. Moreover, a change in the characteristics of an assisting driving force of the spring means 21 in response to a flexing degree of the knee joint 8 can be restrained. |

Synchronous drive for split sickle bars on harvester header
A drive arrangement for split sickle bar sections of a harvester having a long cutter bar such as a combine, swather, mower-conditioner or the like utilizes separate drives for each sickle bar section, and provides for synchronizing the movement of the sickle bar sections so that they reach the respective ends of the reciprocating path simultaneously. In one form series connected first and second hydraulic motors are used, and the first motor in the series connection is reduced in speed from that which would be obtained from the full flow of a pump, by passing a portion of the pump fluid flow to a flow line leading to the second motor, a bleed valve bleeds off a portion of the flow in the flow line to regulate the second motor speed and position to match the speed and position of the first motor in response to signals indicating the position of the sickle bar sections. The sickle bar sections are thus synchronized. |

Attachable trimmer/edger for a lawnmower
A trimmer/edger attached to a conventional lawnmower and using the lawnmower's power source. The edger/trimmer cutting element is attached to the front of the lawnmower. A rotatable cable runs from the cutting element to a contact member attached at an opening on the lawnmower housing. A planar disc is secured to the top of the conventional grass cutting blade. Upon powering up the lawnmower, both the cutting blade and planar disc begin to rotate. Upon squeezing an operating lever, a rotatable portion of the contact member comes in contact with the rotating disc causing the rotatable cable to turn, which in turn causes the cutting head, having cutting strings attached, to spin and be able to be used as an edger or trimmer, depending on its position, at the same time the lawnmower is being used to cut the grass. |

Reference position determining method
In a printing apparatus, individual positional data for positions of four object marks provided on a plurality of FPCs held on a conveyance tray are acquired by a mark position acquisition section based on an image acquired by an image acquisition unit. In a displaced mark specifying section, relative positional relations of four object marks are determined, and compared with a reference positional relation, by which a displaced object mark is specified. Then, in a reference position determining section, a reference position for a plurality of FPCs on a conveyance tray is determined based on a plurality of object marks resulting from excluding the displaced object mark out of the four object marks. Thus, a reference position in execution of printing in a printing unit can be determined with high precision. |
