A coin acceptor or rejector includes a coin chute having an acceptance portion, a rejection portion, and a flapper controlling the direction of movement of the coins to one of the portions. A sensing coil surrounds the chute at its coin-receiving end, so as to have its Q substantially decreased and to create energy losses caused by eddy currents being dissipated by a coin and by the magnetic hysterisis of the coin. The coil is in an oscillator circuit so that, in response to sensing of a coin, the effective resistance of the oscillator is reduced and current flow is increased.

117 COIN DISCRIMINATION APPARATUS PCT/GB1991000685 1991-04-30 WO1991018372A1 1991-11-28 COIN CONTROLS LIMITED
In coin discrimination apparatus, a coin under test rolls past first and second inductive sensors (C1, C2) which produce first and second coin signals (x1 x2) in dependence upon the coin under test. The coin signals are compared with data defining first and second stored windows (W1, W2) to determine acceptability of the coin. In accordance with the invention the data for the first and second windows (W1, W2) are stored respectively for providing both a first and a second window width ((W11, W12; W21, W22), wherein the first window width corresponds to the width of a distribution of coin signals associated with acceptable coins of a particular denomination, and the second window width corresponds to the width of said distribution but excludes therefrrom a range of values corresponding to fraudulent coins, and a coin under test is deemed to be acceptable upon the coin signals falling either within a first or a second acceptance condition wherein, for the first acceptance condition, the value of the first coin signal falls within the first window width of the first window (W11), and the value of the second coin signal falls within the second window width of the second window (W22), and for the second acceptance condition the value of the first coin signal falls within the second window width of the first window (W12), and the value of the second coin signal falls within the first window width of the second window (W21).

119 DEVICE FOR VERIFYING COINS PCT/CH1986000105 1986-07-25 WO1987000661A1 1987-01-29 AUTELCA AG
In order to verify whether the coin (2) possesses the stamped pattern of an acceptable coin, the surface of the coin is scanned by an inductive probe (5) over a track (10), thus producing a signal which corresponds to the depth of the impression along the track (10). The relative movement of the probe (5), which is needed for scanning, in relation to the coin (2) is obtained as the coin (2) rolls past the probe (5). A memory stores, as comparison signals, signals for tracks (10, 11) displaced in relation to one another on the face and reverse of all acceptable coins. These signals are obtained as the coins roll past the probe (5) from various starting positions. The verification signal received for the coin to be checked is compared with each of the stored comparison signals, if one of these comparisons results in acceptance within specific limits, an acceptance signal is generated.
120 METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DISCRIMINATING DIFFERENT COINS PCT/US1997017724 1997-09-30 WO1998014910A1 1998-04-09 COIN MECHANISMS, INC.; HOFFMAN, Kirk, D.; HUIZENGER, Robert; FERRANTELLI, Joe
A method and apparatus for discriminating between coins in free fall is disclosed. A coin sensor (20) employing a substantially linear, substantially horizontal magnetic field is used to obtain a digital signature of a free falling coin (15). That signature is compared to digital signatures of sample coins stored in memory until an identification is made. An identification and validation of a test coin is made, accepted coins are sorted between alternative accept paths, and the direction of movement of the coins is verified for fraud protection as the test coin free falls a vertical distance of approximately 4 inches.
