A coin validator with an improved coin processing rate, performs primary validation testing on coins (3) at a primary validation station (5) as successive coins roll down a coin rundown path (4). Unacceptable coins pass to a coin reject path (12) but coins found acceptable by the primary validation testing are deflected by a solenoid operated gate (11) to a coin accept path (13). The acceptable coins pass a further sensor coil (C4). Auxiliary coin testing is carried out by a microprocessor (7) by analysing the time taken for the coin to reach and move away from the further sensor (C4). The microprocessor performs undertimer and overtimer routines (figures 3A, B) and if the coin arrives within the under and overtimer ranges (t1, t2), the coin is accepted. When the coin throughput rate is increased, the undertimer is switched off in order to permit the coin throughput rate for valid coins to be increased, without loss of security.

The present invention relates to a coin recognition apparatus for recognition of acceptable coins. The image sensor is configured to produce a sequence of images of a coin while the coin is sliding on the coin chute, and the processing means is configured to estimate a sequence of increasing and decreasing parameter values based on the contours of the coin in the sequence of images, and to determine whether the coin is acceptable or not based on the estimated sequence of increasing and decreasing parameter values.

A coin validation mechanism for evaluating coins and the like inserted therein and for validating acceptable coins includes a coin chute defining a coin path and a sensor for evaluating the type of material of which the object in the coin chute is made of. The sensor for evaluating includes a coil sensor positioned adjacent the coin path and a non-resonant electrical circuit for operation of the coil sensor. The coin validation mechanism also includes a light source for directing light across the coin path and a light sensor for sensing light directed across the coin path. An electronic unit is provided for evaluating an electromagnetic pertubation caused by an object moving past the coil sensor and for determining the amount of light blocked by the object in the coin path by comparing the amount of light sensed by the light sensor with the object in the coin with the amount of light sensed by the light sensor in the absence of an object in the coin path. The electronic unit further compares the amount of light blocked by the object in the coin path and the electromagnetic pertubation with known values for valid coins to evaluate whether the object in the coin path is a valid coin or not.

The invention relates to a coin verifier which comprises a support for supporting a coin during verification. The coin verifier is characterised in that the support comprises two shutters which are arranged opposite to each other. The shutters support the coin in a v-shaped manner when closed. The inventive coin verifier comprises a recess for retaining a coin during verification and is characterised in that the recess is terminated by two outlets. The outlets are closeable by the shutters for selectively dumping the coin through one of the two outlets. Further, a method for verifying a coin is disclosed which comprises the steps of maintaining/ retaining the coin in a retainer equipped with sensors, verifying the coin by the sensors and selectively opening one of two shutters. The choice of the shutter which is opened depends on the result of the verification, in particular whether or not the coin is accepted.

A self-tuning coin testing apparatus (10) having a coin sensor circuit (21, 22) which produces an output signal indicative of a parameter characteristic of the coins which are tested by the coin sensor and a programmed microprocessor (35) which stores an initial acceptance limit, determines whether the output signal from the coin sensor is indicative of a valid coin, stores a signal based on the output signal for each valid coin, calculates a statistical function based on the stored signal, and finally computes and stores a new acceptance limit based on the stored signals for a predetermined number of previously accepted coins. The statistical function is preferably weighted so that it is based upon values for only a predetermined number of the most recently accepted coins so that a recent average is maintained.
