The loss by the modulator is, therefore, compensated by the semiconductor optical amplifier element 7 connected behind the semiconductor optical phase modulator 3, by which the loss over the entire part of the modulator is decreased down to 0dB. The high-speed PSK modulation at low electric power is thus attained without losing the signal light power.
