A system for forming composite video images from one or more foreground images and one or more background images. In one embodiment, s sum of a suppressed foreground image signal with weight α, with one or more selected foreground colors suppressed, and a background image signal with weight 1−α′ (0≦α′≦1) is formed, where a and α′ may vary from pixel to pixel and with time. In another embodiment, a shadow from a selected foreground image is impressed on selected pixels of a background image. In another embodiment, foreground suppression and shadowing are combined, optionally by retrofitting, using an existing α-mixer or a newly constructed α-mixer. Provision of a chroma key map allows a foreground image shadow to be prescribed pixel by pixel, including a transition region in which the shadowed image slowly disappears.

A chroma keyer with correction for background defects generates a control signal that does not include variations associated with the background defects. The chroma magnitude of a reference signal that represents a chroma key set with a color background scene without a foreground object is used as a divisor for a hue select signal generated by a hue selector from a chrominance component of an input signal that represents the chroma key set with the foreground object to produce a chroma key control signal. The chroma key control signal is combined with the reference signal to produce a control signal for background suppression. The chroma key control signal also is input to a key circuit to produce a key signal for shaping a new background scene. The reference signal also may be combined with a uniform color signal from a reference matte generator to produce an error signal that is combined with the chroma key control signal to produce the control signal for correction of the background defects in the input signal.

A chroma keyer with fringe control offset adds a fringe control offset value to a correlation output produced by a hue selector. The hue selector compares the hues of a foreground image, representing a foreground object in front of a reference matte background, with a reference hue corresponding to the reference matte background to produce the correlation output. The adjusted correlation signal is then negatively clipped and provided at the output of the hue selector as a hue select signal that is used for deriving a chroma key signal and for providing background suppression to the foreground image.

An improved chroma keyer has a secondary hue selector for chrominance suppression of "blue fringing" effects. The second hue selector provides a second chroma key signal from a foreground video signal, with the selected hue being offset from that of a primary hue selector. A matte generator having a hue corresponding to the hue of a backing in the foreground video signal is modulated as a function of the second chroma signal. The modulated hue from the matte generator is subtracted from the foreground video signal to produce a modified foreground video signal. The modified foreground video signal is converted into a shaped foreground video signal. The shaped foreground video signal is combined with a shaped background video signal to produce a composited output video signal. The shaped background video signal is a function of a background video signal and a primary chroma key signal from the primary hue selector.

A graphics system includes a graphics controller for rendering polygons with specular highlighting (glare) based on a comparison of texel color values from a texture map to a range of color values. The graphics processor includes range registers for storing the range of color values and color comparators for comparing a texel color value to the range of colors stored in the range registers. The range of color values used in the comparison corresponds to the range of colors of those portions of a texture for which specular highlighting is appropriate, such as metallic surfaces off which light reflects. If a texel color value to be applied to a screen pixel is within the range of colors defined for specular highlighting, the graphics processor adds an appropriate specular component to the texel value.

An efficient chroma key-based coding technique for digital video with an optimized switching threshold. An optimized binary keying threshold is provided for switching between a first image region (such as a background region) and second image region (such as a foreground object) video picture. The threshold optimizes a PSNR of a quantization error Q of a key color K. A chroma key technique is also provided for representing the shape of a video object, where the shape information (alpha plane) of a foreground object is embedded in the keyed output, so there is no need to carry an explicit alpha plane, or use alpha plane coding. The chroma key shape representation technique provides a smooth transition at the boundary between objects without the need for special switching patterns, such as a general gray scale shape coding tool, or post-processing, e.g., using feathering filters.

The apparatus decides a chroma area in an input image. The apparatus replaces the chroma area with a background image.

A method and apparatus for chroma keying filtered textures are provided. Chroma keying is performed which replaces the input texel color with a new color if the input texel color matches the chroma color. The chroma key circuitry keeps the input texel color and sets the alpha component to 1 if the input texel color does not match the chroma color. The chroma keyed texels are filtered using bilinear filtering. The color components of the filtered texels are fogged using a fog factor, a fog color, and the alpha component of the filtered texel. The fogged and filtered signal is blended with a background color to produce an output color for the texels.
