CONSTITUTION: The reference plate 2 for correcting the position of an area in the original reading range is arranged on the back of an original board 1. The reference plate 2 is divided into a part 2A positioned within the original reading range 1A on the original board 1 and parts 2B, 2B' positioned on the outside of the reading range 1A with colors and set up so as to coincide with the original reading range in the main scanning direction as shown in the figure. The main scanning direction of the reference plate 2 is read out by an optical unit in a surficiently wider range A than the real reading width of the main scanning direction to detect original reading reference points REF, REF'. The effective reading range is determined from the reference points REF, REF'.
