USE: Herbicides having herbicidal effects on Sida spinosa L., Asiatic dayflower, and common vetch which cannot been casily destroyed, in a small amount, effective against broad leaf and grass weeds, without phytotoxicity to the crops, e.g. soybeans, peanuts, and corns.
PROCESS: 3-(n)-Prophylsulfenyl-4'-α,α,α-trifluoromethyldiphenyl ether of formula II, obtained by the well-known method, is dissolved in a suitable solvent, preferably acetic acid, oxidized with an oxidizing agent, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid, or potassium permanganate, and purified to form the compound of formula I.
