USE: Perfumery or a base of stimulant which is a raw material for useful cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, etc. Harmless to the human body. Soluble in various organic compounds, e.g., alcohols such as ethyl alcohol, aromatic compounds such as benzyl alcohol, aliphatic compounds such as citral, etc. It is hydrolyzed in an acidic solution to give menthol and 5-hydroxypentanal which are useful as perfumery and stimulants. For example, when the compound is used as an ingredient of hair tonic, it slowly decomposes on the head skin into menthol, etc. and exhibits aromaticity and stimulation.
PROCESS: The compound of formula is prepared by reacting 1mol of menthol with pref. ≥1.2mol of 2,3-dihydropyran in the presence of a catalyst such as p-toluenesulfonic acid, in a common solvent such as benzene.
